Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

Gym was disappointed boebert got kicked out before she sat on his lap. You know they were working up to it.

Is it at all a good strategy for the dems to say we will sit out like 20 or votes if you nominate a speaker that will say the 2020 elections were valid? Would the gop even do that?

in January when McCarthy got elected they were doing like three or four votes a day. Why are they spacing these out so much?

Because January was a shit show.

Jim Jordan has thrown his hands in the air and given up. Apparently asking McHenry to be made interim speaker through January now which sounds like a non-starter for many Republicans.

McCarthy's strategy was to subject himself and his party to unending embarrassment until they threw up their hands and gave in.

Jordan's strategy of having people call and threaten members' spouses takes a little more time in between votes.

It's pretty funny that we often think of the Republican party as a much more unified block than the Democrats that often moves together in lockstep (such as in supporting Trump), and yet they can't even manage to find a single House member that they can agree on to be the Speaker.

I wonder how many people there are that would be capable of getting the votes but aren't interested in the job

The republicans that want the job are the dumbest of all-in-magats. The ones that don't want it are reaping what they sowed by (at best) looking the other way when it it benefits them.

Probably zero. One faction loves chirping about cutting spending, shutting down government and all that but doesn’t actually want to do that because it’d be devastating. Then you have the smaller faction that would actually do it.

The parties have flipped once gain just like they did in the 60's over civil rights. Republicans used to be the party of the constitution, of law and order, of engagement in foreign affairs, serious governing, and generally acting like the grown ups in the room. Now it is completely obvious that they don't care about any of that while the Democrats most certainly do.

It’s a party shift but not a flip. Republicans have brought a lot of people into politics who don’t care about politics. They’ve lost a lot of people who do. We’ll see if Republicans can keep turning low information voters into misinformed voters long term.
