Dave Clawson Credibility Watch

Clawson may have to set the clock back to 2014 and rebuild from scratch if enough players leave.

"We've lost our way, Stan... I'm mad at myself for letting it get to this point."
"If not for a fluky win at Pitt, it's much worse."
"I've done a poor job preparing the team for the schedule we had."

He credited the defense for a good effort in the 2nd half. They only allowed 3 points, two missed FG drives, and the game clinching drive.
WHY Won’t rePOrters AsK cLaWSon HArD quEsTIONS!

Clawson has more than earned a bad season with 7 straight bowl appearances. Sorry if that sounds LOWF, but he has nearly doubled our bowl total. Not that he thinks he deserves a pass, of course. Glad to hear him owning it, but not surprised. I expect he will right the ship in the coming seasons.

Those may be the best and most honest comments from Clawson this season. The season was put in jeopardy when he named Griffis as the starting QB in spite of his small size and limited skills. Did Clawson believe Griffis was the diamond in the rough and the small guy that was going to defy the odds. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say yes. There were many clues in the Elon and Vandy games that Griffis was in over his head. The ODU game left little doubt we had big problems. By the GT game it was blatantly obvious Griffis was not a D I QB. Yet Clawson continued to play him failing to try something else for the benefit of the team. He kept digging the hole even deeper by continuing to play Griffis (outside of the Pitt fluke). Then the Duke game broke our back with little Griffis literally fumbling the game away. I am fairly certain that Kern nor Marucci are the QB we need either. However, both clearly give us a better chance than Griffis. I think this is where Clawson lost the team. I have no idea what he saw in Griffis but it was clearly wrong. The question is why did he not make a change earlier? Clawson has earned a lot of goodwill over the course of the last several years and he seems to be a great fit for the school. He needs to fully explain what the hell he was doing staying with Griffis for so long and then a plan to fix the program.

What shocked me was our D line getting dominated by a State OL that had been ineffective run blocking. State moved a WR to TB a week ago to shake up the run game.

Some key quotes from Clawson -- 11/11/2023

The final quote tells me he's flat-out done with Griffis and he'll never see the field again. I guess Kern is next man-up but I would hope something happens in the portal. Unlike Grobe, Clawson is not saying "wasn't that neat?" after losing these games. I have full confidence Dave will do everything possible to fix this. It is obviously eating him alive.

"I should have had us in a better spot with some of the personnel losses we had." -- tells me he recognizes the QB debacle (aka disaster)

"Again, the Florida State game was not good, but this was worse than not good. This was non-competitive" -- tells me the team has quit and he knows it.

"We got beat bad, guys. There’s no other way of putting it. There’s no bright spot today. It was a thorough ass-kicking.”

"We have to figure out where we are at quarterback moving forward. Right now, we gave Mitch certainly a lot of games. If Michael Kern is healthy, we need to look at him and see where we are at that position moving forward. We certainly have to evaluate it." -- Griffis might as well move on. He's done as QB.

It’s like we had never seen Conception run an orbit sweep or the QB run after dropping to pass. Piss poor defensive coaching

Hopefully Clawson will at least try to give another QB 1st team snaps. If he can admit he's done a poor job this year, he can admit he failed at evaluating the QB position.

But at the end of the day, in college football giving up between 24-26 like we’ve done the last few weeks will win the game most of the time. Clemson was even less. VT was also less than that if you just count points scored against the D.

Pretty sure Sig has taken multiple hits off the same shit our entire team and coaching staff smoked pre-game.

But his point still stands.

At least Clawson is looking at himself. This is completely on him. I give him credit for accepting it. 10 years ago, Grobe was giving us postgame crap like, "When they're ready to win, they'll win" before heading out for a quick 9 holes.

Marucci overcame his setbacks against Pitt and put together a game-winning drive with a game-winning TD pass. It was the best moment of the season, but Clawson sent a message to the team that a clutch performance doesn't matter by not rewarding Marucci for a job well-done. He gave the ball back to Griffis and we're stuck where we are.
This. It might have gone bad with Tino too, but at least Dave would be trying.

Ok, sure the buck stops with the HC. But in choosing and sticking with the QB, how much deference was given to the OC?

Just don't understand why he didn't play the hot QB hand and stay with Tino QB1 after the Pitt win.

Hell, the team literally carried him off the field and Griffis was hurt. Have to believe the team would have rallied around Tino and things could have been much different.

Clawson never even gave Tino a second look and lost the team.

But what does that have to do with that post? Are you saying reporters don't need to ask Clawson questions because he volunteers all the answers?
I think normal questions get real answers when Clawson is ready and able to provide them. I’ve never found him to be one to obfuscate his feelings when circumstances allow.

What are "normal questions" vs. "hard questions?" There are plenty of things I'd like to know that I don't think he's been asked. Taking blame in response to Stan asking for general thoughts is more feelings than "real answers."
