Dave Clawson Credibility Watch

Yeah, I was surprised Clawson devoted so much energy to that topic, but he definitely did.

Yea I don't think I've spent much time this season saying "GODDAMMIT BANKS, CATCH THE DAMN BALL" or something similar for Ke'Shawn/Morin

On the other hand....I KNOW I have said "GODDAMMIT MITCH....MAKE A SECOND READ AND GET RID OF THE BALL" or "GODDAMMIT MITCH, THIS ISN'T DANCE CLASS, STOP IT WITH THE HOKEY POKEY"

I've been thinking since he left that we would see the Hartman who choked against Louisville, PITT, Wisconsin, etc. But now even if we do see that Hartman, we still lose.

IDK...he hasn't thrown a TD since Oct. 14th....and I forgot to mention previously (I'll add it) that he took 4 sacks in the first 5 games and has taken 10 in the last 5.

I have said “catch the damn ball” about Morin several times.

Here's what Dave said about the receivers:

<On having two must win games for a bowl after this bad game>

Yeah, we gotta play the guys who are playing hard. So...I mean... very, very, very few bright spots, but I thought some of our young receivers went out there and made plays. Horatio Fields, Wesley Grimes, and Deuce Alexander were more productive than our starting receivers. They went out there and made plays, so, you know, maybe we have to play those guys more. To me, they flashed...it was late in the game, but they did some really good things...I don't mind us losing the game...I don't want us to lose our way and our culture, and today, I haven't seen a mess like that in years....Florida State game was not good...this was worse than not good...this was non-competitive

<later, on the wide receivers>

Yeah I don't think they're in a good place...these guys are used to going out there and getting open and having the ball delivered to them, and whether it's our struggles at quarterback or some of our protection issues, that hasn't happened this year, and after ten weeks, that can start to wear on you, but as a competitor you gotta go out there and compete....I thought there were contested catches today that I would expect our guys to make. As a wide receiver, if you get one on one coverage and a chance to make a play on the ball, that's all you can ask for....When you're playing a team like NC State and they are bringing an extra defender...you have to make contested catches.

I find it hard to fault the WRs for not getting 50/50 balls when the coach chose a QB who couldn’t get them 50/50 balls all season. They’re literally out of practice.

Disagree - QB & OL play has been dreadful but one would expect our WR's to catch balls that hit them in the hands.

The entire offense has been an all-systems failure this season and the WR's own a part of that for dropping balls, not getting off man coverage, etc.

While a fair point, I can definitely see how aggravating and tiresome it could be as a WR to try to get off the line quickly and beat your man or to get a step or step and a half on him only to have your QB fall down after holding the ball too long....and running back and forth from the huddle to 30-40 yards downfield. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth....the same sack/tipped pass/failed rush attempt from the SAME QB play after play.

And I can see how you'd get to the point that you wouldn't actually expect the ball to get to you.

All that said, no athlete should ever just give up...and it's assuming a lot to just say they couldn't keep running routes and getting tired of no balls making it past the line of scrimmage...but I can SEE how that could wear on you. Not saying it actually happens that way, but ya know.

Sounds like starters have given up on Mitch and May hit the portal if we don’t fix this crap.

Even if there was any truth to this; the timing doesn't work for that scenario to play out, unless WF already has an under table deal in place with a QB at another program (and Clawson does not operate that way; WF does not contact players until they enter the portal).

When the transfer portal opens, those that hop in will start taking visits and getting NIL offers right away (and unlike WF, other schools have already started trying to entice WF players who could transfer). Once that happens, those thinking of leaving are going to take the deals that are offered before someone else gets them rather than wait to see who WF lands through the portal; there isn't time to play games like that. Plus, any players thinking of transferring aren't going to be breaking down scouting reports on potential incoming transfers. Those players that want to go will go; those players that want to stay will stay; no one is waiting for other transfers to commit to WF first before making a decision.

There may be three.

The football transfer portal opens December 4. Those WF players that are looking to transfer will enter that date. The first that WF would make contact with a potential incoming transfer would be sometime after December 4. Those leaving WF aren't going to wait to see who WF lands before deciding where to go next.

Our WRs have definitely regressed this year. They don’t really get open, Morin has had a bunch of drops (for him), Grimes has been terrible, etc.

We hired a WR coach from a triple option team to replace Higgins. Seems silly. Before I cancelled my 247 subscription, Les and Cam were being very condescending about every potential concern about the hire.

Think our WR coaching has left a lot to be desired this year.

From Clawson's comments, there is definitely concern regarding the attitude of the starting WR corps. He said exactly that: "Yeah, I don't think they are in a good place".

And there is concern that they would transfer; he directly addressed that as well regarding everyone who participated in Senior Day.

It seems Clawson and the staff have until Dec 4 to fix that issue (or not).

Surprised that this has not come up earlier, but the focus here has been just laying all of the blame on Mitch Griffis (and he's deserves a lot, but not all of it). Granted WF lost a stud receiver to the NFL, but last year, it felt like WF won almost every one on one battle with a DB. Just does not happen this year. Very subjective, but with a strong receiver room, the quality of play is clearly down at that position, even accounting for the decline in QB and OL play. Feel like its fair to think that Higgins changing roles played a role in this.

How did you accomplish this herculean feat? I thought the evil geniuses at 247 made it impossible to cancel!!!

Reminder that Clawson's weekly presser is this afternoon. Usually hits YouTube by evening. Will be interested in his comments and to see if he's as pissed today as Saturday night. I'm assuming he will say Kern is the starter if asked.
