2023 College Football Coaching Carousel

AD’s are nuts. Firing coaches with winning records and paying them millions not to coach can not be a sustainable model.

It depends.

Texas fired Tom Herman in 2021, UT paid a 15.4 million buyout through 2023.
Georgia fired Mark Richt in 2015, he signed an extension through 2019 earlier that year.
FSU fired Willie Taggart in 2019 after he went 9-12 in a season and a half.
Ole Miss paid $16 million total in buyouts when they fired Matt Luke after three years in 2019.

These teams are doing just fine.

Then there's places like Auburn and Tennessee.

Chip Kelly has a .500 record at UCLA and a freshmen QB, who looks like the real thing. Andy Avalos had not had a losing record a Boise. Zach Arnett is 4-6 in his first year and took over after a coach who died. Miss st is always gonna be a tough job, Boise is gonna lose guys to the portal every year and UCLA will never be a top 10 program. These all seem like bad firings to me.

Kelly has had four years. Here's the thing:

His record as Bruins coach is 33-33. When is the last time a prominent sports boss in this town has been allowed to be so average for so long?

Two of Kelly’s three fired predecessors had better records, Jim Mora canned after going 46-30 and Karl Dorrell replaced after going 35-27. Only Rick Neuheisel had a losing record, but even he went to the Pac-12 championship game.

They'll eventually find the right guy, but none of those guys were him. And they're moving to the B1G and need somebody who can either keep CA talent at home or recruit successfully nationally, and COACH.

UCLA coaches since 1945:

C. Kelly: 31-33 vs. FBS
J. Mora: 46-30
R. Neuheisel: 21-28
K. Dorrell: 35-27
B. Toledo: 49-32
T. Donahue: 151-74-8
D. Vermeil: 15-5-3
P. Rodgers: 19-12-1
T. Prothro: 41-18-3
B. Barnes: 31-34-3
R. Sanders: 66-19-1
B. LaBrucherie: 23-16

Most places don’t find the right guy and cycle through coaches every 4 or 5 years when maybe continuity have been what they needed.

Here is the 2017-2018 carousel, how many of these guys are still in the same place?

Finding your guy is harder than people think.

You think Moore stays at UCLA after this? Or does he go to MSU depending on who they hire?

Moore isn’t staying at UCLA. He’s going to get a money bag to leave. UCLA won’t have a coach in place before Moore leaves

I don't know or really care, but Kelly hasn't gotten there at UCLA and they can fire him if they have the money. It's still a desirable job.

What ever happened to Bob Toledo? He had it cooking there for a year or two.

Neuheisel blew and yet he gets to spout drivel on Sirius XM everyday. He’s gotta be the worst talking head out there (and there are a ton of bad options).
