2023 Carolina Panthers thread - HOF Julius Peppers

Bryce is good. No rookie QB could be thrown into a worse situation than this and he's handled it admirably with smarts and with class. If you really watch what's going on it's amazing that he can ever complete a single pass. And he's proven to be a fine runner as well. I continue to maintain Bryce is not the problem IMO.

I just texted to see if I could get some info. I don't expect to get a response today but this is so ugly it's worth a try.

There is a reason that Alabama has been playing football at a high level for 100 years and Joe Namath and arguably Tua are the only two decent NFL QBs it has ever produced. I wonder who could have predicted that.

What a shitbag of a pick. Could they even trade him for Tommy DeVito now?

The longer Tepper waits to clean house the worse this will get. Fire Fitt and Reich today so at least he can get an early crack at their replacements. Not that he can be trusted to hire anyone competent. He needs to hire a search firm like colleges sometimes do. Or at least pay for the highest level Indeed subscription this time.
Bart Starr and Ken Stabler went to Bama. They’re in the NFL HoF.

I will admit to being upbeat about the WRs, thinking they could at least by serviceable for Bryce in year 1, and that hopefully we could get a big FA in the next offseason who'd be excited to play with Bryce. I thought Chark had shown flashes just seemed to have injury issues, was excited about Mingo, and thought Thielen was a solid pick-up and exactly what a rookie QB needed, and Hurst could be useful. And of course I was all in on the coaching staff based on all I had been hearing.

I just can’t get my head around why we signed Hurst and Sanders.

Yeah I felt most of this. Definitely had no reason to suspect the entire o line would be dangerously worthless. Ickey sucked last year but all rookie tackles suck so you expect some incremental improvement. Not the same mental mistakes he continues to show at least.

Think almost everyone here was excited to turn the page from a clearly in over their head staff to a more competent appearing staff - even if Reich himself was a semi dud he pulled top coordinator candidates so I figured the team was in good hands.

Blaming Young for making the audible is stupid when you could blame Reich for designing a play in which that was the choice to audible to.

We don't know what the original play was, so it very well could have been correct to audible out of it. But for the secondary play choice to be a behind the LOS pass on 4th and 6 with the game on the line is just beyond stupid.

yeah

I know that Saban told Tepper directly that Bryce is the best QB he has ever coached. I really don't think he's having a difficult rookie season because he played at Alabama and was spoiled by his receiver talent.

It's a pretty big indictment on our front office if this carries as much weight there as guitar seems to think based on his posting. It's pretty terrible if they just let the coach recommendation letter make the scouting decision for them.

Nick Saban didn't coach CJ Stroud. We weren't deciding between Bryce Young and AJ McCarron.

Or the other two NFL quarterbacks that Saban coached at Bama ?

Bryce had Jameson Williams and John Metchie in 2021, but the 2022 wide receivers were not so hot.

PFT was reporting yesterday that the Bryce decision was all Tepper and that there were mixed feelings in the building. There's the infamous clip of McCown talking to Stroud about playing basketball when he moves to Charlotte...

lol. come on. if Houston had number 1 they were taking Bryce. Most teams had Young as their number 1. They may have gotten it wrong, time will tell, but this wasn't an egregious mistake. It's one most of the teams would've made.
College coach recommendation and feedback is just a data point.

This is hindsight talking. There was a solid month-long stretch where the betting favorite to go #1 overall was CJ Stroud.

I’m not here trying to debate Vegas accuracy in assessing the situation, but it wasn’t an obvious slam dunk Young over Stroud

They showed some Bryce highlights during the iron bowl and it looked like a totally different player. Downfield throws and everything.

I dont really have a ton of anxiety about Bryce’s capabilities - I mostly think he’s being killed by his line and being woefully underserved by the staff. Stroud would be getting smoked here too.

At least Tepper didn’t cling to this mistake for years, I’ll give him that.

Now go out there and hire someone that didn’t fail at their previous job in the NFL
