He looked good in the spring but not so much in fall camp. The other freshman RB, David Egbe, passed him.

Could easily get into spring practice and think, "whoa, it's slowed down for Drew Pickett, he's going to be a star."

This discussion with staff always leads back to WF having an O-line that isn't that big and needing the RB to help in pass protection.
That’s fine and dandy when the linebackers sit back and wait. When they decide to fill gaps and there isn’t a hot read to the RB in the flats you end up depending on a guy that’s 5’10” and 200 lbs to save your ass.

I think its truly more about, 7-8 in the box and all coming in, and we have 6-7 (which includes an RB and TE to block)

Thats a scheme problem, not a weak Oline problem

Agreed -- which is why whatever offseason evaluation of the offense is crucial in the next few weeks/months.

We do have to figure something out up front for when teams bring 7-8 guys, which has been a huge problem for us the past 3 years.

It will be really interesting if the staff makes tweaks to the offense, or goes for a complete overhaul. All boils down to how they view this year - as an indictment on the system as a whole, or an indictment on the talent we had on the OL/QB positions.

Yeah it just seemed like the algorithm was off this year- not necessarily dead in the water. Felt like in years past- WR's would come back to the ball when other team brings 7-8 and we would win one-on-one match-ups most of the time and get a completion. For whatever reason, we didn't seem to win those match ups this year and/or Mitch didn't see them and/or get rid of ball in time. I really think the staff over-estimated Mitch's abilities talent wise but more importantly- ability to correctly read the defense and run the mesh. They thought we could just plug him in post-Sam as next man up and keep rolling.

What am I missing,

Did Eli Hall leave the team?

If so, apologies that I missed it.

Obviously, we've found some pretty talented guys with the strategy of recruiting, but I've always wondered why we can't recruit OL like similar challenging academic schools. I feel like BC had a fucking bulldozer on the line of scrimmage for years.

As mentioned above, WF has put several OL in the NFL in recent years, Jurgens and Gordon may join them. The problem with OL this year, was that Nick Sharpe, who may be WF's next NFL lineman was lost for the season against Vandy, and the replacements were either banged up or not ready yet. An OL is only as good as the weakest link, and WF had a couple of weak-links even though Jurgens and Gordon were good.

But look at Cooley. We didn’t really need him because of Claiborne. Clawson just needs to keep recruiting good RBs and then let them play. Don’t put the system ahead of the talent. Design a system for the young stud RB to succeed.

So weird (sad) that Liberty and Cooley would have beaten WFU soundly this year, no question.

Yeah I don't think it's fair to put all the struggles on Offense at the foot of the OL for this season- it was a combination of everything going wrong. Didn't think about Sharpe going down.

I didn't mean to imply that the OL has been a consistent weakness. Just that it's possible at a school like Wake to have elite size at the position. Maybe not in the NIL/Portal era though.

I wonder what kind of negotiation Kern is having right now to not hop into the portal as well. Dude has a ton of leverage at the moment.
I don't think many fans, even here, know how really good Kern was coming into Wake. His bio is the longest I can remember for a QB except maybe Hartman.and Jamie Harris.

Hard to believe after watching him play a full game vs Syracuse, that the coaches didn't develop him right alongside Hartman. It's amazing he has stayed. His H.S. accomplishments were at the highest level of Fla. ball, IIRC. Definitely looks like the bio of student Florida, FSU, or Miami bound. Read below:

A team captain at Lake Nona who enrolled at Wake Forest in January, 2019 ... A three-star quarterback ranked as the No. 25 dual threat prospect in the nation ... Three-year starter at Lake Nona High for head coach Anthony Paradiso ... Operated out of a no-huddle, pass-oriented attack and helped the Lions to a 7-4 record as a senior ... Had three games in 2018 of 400 or more passing yards ... Threw for 337 yards and five touchdown passes in a 49-7 win over Windermere ... Named first team all-metro ... In 2017, led all of Central Florida in passing as a junior ... Threw for 3,383 yards and 39 touchdowns while completing 255-of-397 passes (64.2 percent) with 39 scoring passes ... Earned all-district and all-metro honors ... Named second team all-state in Class 7A ... Threw five touchdown passes on 24-of-25 passes for 343 yards in a win over Harmony ... Threw three touchdown passes in a win over East River to win the Class 7A, District 5 football championship ... Starter at quarterback as a sophomore in 2016.

So FYI, apparently any moratorium Wake has on transfers not making Wake offers public is either not true or don't apply to MTSU Linebacker Sam Brumfield III.

Also, Sam was at JUCO for 3 years, enrolled in MTSU in January and is currently a Junior. So once again, I want to call SHENNANIGANS on Clawson's "we can't go after all transfers speech."
