2023-24 Wake Forest Basketball Season - 21-14 (11-9) - KP#29 / NET#43

Having watched us play several times now there are a couple things that stand out.
1) Boopie Miller is a very good fit for how we like to play
2) Hunter Sallis is a talented scorer BUT his shot selection is often just heat checks and forced shots
3) Andrew Carr is the most important player when not in foul trouble
4) Cam Hildreth is nicely settling into his role as a number three scorer
5) Keller and Friedrichsen are becoming excellent role players and contributors
6) Efton Reid is contributing rebounds but not points and It's not clear whether he'll become a true inside threat
7) Overall our depth is improved, and when Monsanto comes back that will be a big boost to scoring options
Jury is still out on what Elton will bring to table on the O side, but no doubt he significantly improves our D. We have limited the layups/dunks which happened ad nauseam vs the Utes and LSU Aa lot from the few games he has played and adds significant depth and options in front court we didn’t have before. To me if the big man can be paint presence on d and rebound on both ends while getting junk baskets this team is a force with the other weapons.

Can't remember a Wake team where you could project this kind of variance regarding their ACC record. Could honestly see them finishing anywhere from 2nd to 10th in the league. I think they will finish 4th or 5th at 12-8 or 13-7.

It's pretty nice this year in that Boopie, Hunter, Cam or Carr can look like the best player on any given night.

And I still think our most talented player is on the bench! Hoping for a Damari return for Christmas

I don’t think Efton was expected to score much outside of dunks and free throws, but he’s hurting us not scoring at all. He should at least be getting some lob dunks and free throw attempts.

I feel like it has been years and years since we had a guy you just give the ball to and say "go get a bucket"... That's Sallis to me.

Man Man was close, but struggled with his outside shot too much.
Ty was too small for that.
LaRavia was close, but at times it felt more like physicality vs. athleticism. And he deferred on offense too much.

Perhaps I'm overstating the importance of a bucket-getter, but I always felt like we struggled in the last few minutes of close games when we needed to just spread the floor and have someone go 1x1 to get a basket.

Sallis can shoot it. Sallis can drive to the basket. Sallis can rise up and hit a mid-ranger jumper.

Efton was playing with the scout team until a couple of weeks ago. His offense is gonna be fine once he gets more comfortable and the team understands how to play with an actual center.

All I'm waiting for these days is news on Monsanto's return so that I can get excited about us competing for an ACC Championship.

Yeah he can do it all, man man was a bucket getter though. He could do it, he was so dominant that year. I don't think we realize how limited he got with his foot towards the end of the season.

Without looking at any data and just going with #feels, the Sallis pullup jumper is the most automatic shot on the team. He's so quick that he can make it an open shot whenever he wants. In an end-game scenario, that's what I'm calling, with Carr next to the basket.

Yeah I hate mid-range jump shots, but he is very good at them. He, Cam, and Boogie are all elite at scoring in the paint.

If Manman wasn't a bucket-getter I don't know what anyone could possibly mean by that term.

Efton's only played 3 games for us. Against a decent Rutgers team with a normal 4/5 combo he scored 12. Delaware State packed a zone for 80% or more of the game and just gave us wide open 3's all the time. We tried to force it into him a few times but it was kind of pointless. NJIT started 4 guards and their entire front court only had like 5 inside buckets for the game, he fouled out in limited minutes against them. In his two "bad" offensive games we won by a combined 53 points.

Little early to be worrying about his offense based on those 3 games...

I think its the Utah women's coach that uses an air-horn in practice for anytime a player takes a mid-range shot. She pretty much forbids her players from taking mid range shots unless its the only shot available at the end of the shot clock

The reason I didn't include Man Man is because he shot 28% from 3 and settled too much for those in late game situations.

But yeah, he was a man (man) driving to the hoop.

Yeah it’s gotta be the lowest expected value shot out there. Either take a three or get down the lane. But Sallis and Boopie have good looks on theirs

Sallis and Boopie also aren't taking them from just inside the 3 point line, they're really low-range jumpers if you will.

I think Efton’s had some tough luck the last couple games. For the most part his shot has looked good and he has just had a few rim out. He has actual low post moves which is nice. I expect him to progress on the offensive side and look better and better as the year goes on.

Appear to still be 57 in KP.

Forbes says Damari still not practicing and they will reevaluate the knee after Christmas.
