Video Game Thread - $70 Zelda Expansion!

I know that I'm ~6 months late to the party, but I downloaded BG3 yesterday and started playing with the girlfriend backsteating/helping me with dialogue and decisions and oh my god is it a blast.

hell yeah

I bought Hades based on the recommendations of the thread here. Very fun and addicting game.

I am definitely in the "hit buttons as fast as I possibly can and hope for the best" phase, but doing my best to actually slow down and put some thought into the room clears. Meg has messed me up several times.

Dialogue and soundtrack is straight fire.

God Mode, friendo.

Haven't gone that route yet, but may do it. I've done double digit runs - should I just flip it on now, or start a new save file?

just turn it on; it's a really slick design where it makes you just slightly tougher each time you die so you still get better at the game each run but you're not miserable

it's a pretty cool trick

yah I'd just play with god mode, think it's an excellent game mechanic that basically forces/causes the difficulty level to meet you where it needs to and feels good.. and then you also don't feel like runs are as wasted either (key to any good rogue-like)

I have sooo many thoughts already about BG3 but will save them until I’ve had a lot more time with it. But my initial impressions are:
  • I honestly feel like I’m fucking drowning and that I need a whiteboard in the living room at all times to help with the story and abilities, and I’m only slightly kidding about bringing in my mobile one from my office. I have basically no D&D experience (or CRPG) and the depth of each mechanic and item hurts my head.
  • The backseatability of this game is kinda perfect, especially with the turn-based aspects? I guess I haven’t played too many RPGs with my girlfriend, but it’s been a really fun and engaging experience for both of us. I’ve never spent so much time in the character creation of this and we both sat there and were like okay, if we’re going to do D&D shit, let's actually role-play this shit out and figure out who our High Half-Elf Sorcerer with a Draconic Bloodline really is.
  • The sound design and music of this game is phenomenal. I'm smitten with it and hope that it holds this high bar throughout.
  • Fuck Samsung for dropping steamlink.

yeah, the one knock is that all the BG games really don't do a super great job of telling you how anythihng works and you can go for long stretches, or entire games not using a mechanic.

like i didn't realize you can equip/unequip a torch by holding "up" on the Dpad (xbox) until deep into Act 2

on the plus side, you can play this BG game without needing to get too far into the weeds. prior games were a lot less forgiving.

though you will definitely learn to understand the team/role dynamics for combat

I'm so bad at managing my team in combat and understanding what everyone can do.

Talking up stuff in person with a peeps that have a mix of experience is different from navigating by yourself. And needing to understand what all the characters can do to use then effectively. I'm sure I'm doing a lot wrong, but it's been fun.

that's why you need karlach - close the distance, fuck 'em up. and giving Astarion gloves that gave him longbow proficiency + sneak attack = win

Also, one amazing aspect of my gameplay is how often I lose checks. My success rate has gotta be lower than matty marsh for threeeeeee!

rogue PC + Karlach + Wyll + Shadowheart the op party

that one crazy fight by the dock with halsin in the portal, not sure any of the enemies managed to get close with that party... Just a sea of corpses afterwards lol. Meanwhile that fight took my wife two tries oof

she watched me type that and would like me to say that the A2 final boss took me longer to beat than her, which I don't think is true but I'll post it anyway I guess
