Official thread about the movie you just saw

What I found annoying didn’t bother you. That’s fine.

I thought was a long lumbering film that would have been better as one long movie or perhaps a prestige show with more character development. Either way, it was an origin story part 2 for a powerful white guy to be the chosen one of a marginalized people. That’s pretty boring content anyway.

I'm with you on it being long and lumbering. I'm just not getting the lofty reviews at all.

I’m excited to see 2, but I think I’m more excited to see this Love Lies Bleeding movie.

Just watched Bad Lieutenant. That’s a strange movie, but think i liked it more than King of New York.

And now whenever you see Harvey Keitel in anything else, you will flash back to his naked drunkenness in Bad Lieutenant.

Well, somebody hasn't read the novels either.

Tell me you look down on everyone else without telling me you look down on everyone else.

But seriously, Dune was paint by numbers with unnecessarily long strokes. Film snobs love a white savior story though. Makes them feel good about themselves.

I haven't seen this widespread criticism of Dune anywhere besides this board lol. All of my friends have loved it so far, other places I look at loved it. Gotta love the OG boards, cant have anything nice!

Huh? You didn't even know this was Part 2. I don't know how you exist on this planet, let alone aware enough to go see Part 2, and not know it's Part 2. But then to double down on your lack of knowledge so assertively -- very MAGA-esque. You're allowed to not like the movie, but you also deserve to be called out when you're opining on stuff you don't have knowledge of.

And film snobs love a white savior story? WTF are you even talking about?

Herbert was very clear that he was not writing a white savior story, and Dune Messiah reflects that. Herbert was ahead of his time in a lot of ways and the books were anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, anti-messianic religious extremism. Lynch's Dune ignored that, and that's because it was based solely on the first book and changed the ending of the book. Villeneuve is not ignoring Herbert's intent, and you'd see that in Part 3 -- you should have seen it in Part 2 -- which would be based on Dune Messiah (presuming it's made, and it looks like it will be based on the box office), but I highly recommend you not see it so you don't continue beclowning yourself.

It seems like the people who like Dune the most are people who are most familiar with the source material and have been intimately engaged with it over many years. They are also the ones who seem confident in the direction of the film. If that’s the audience for the film, that’s fine. I’m not in it. I judged it based on what was presented.

I didn’t think it was complex at all. I had no questions to answer about it. It’s pretty straightforward. A young prince is part loyalty and the only male descended from a line of witches. His mom is pregnant again. He’s thrust into a political fight over important land inhabited by a mysterious people. He joins the native people.

Perhaps I would have more questions if anyone but the main character was more developed. It could have just been one complete film instead of a long drawn out part 2.

I don't think the box office or A CinemaScore reflects that people who like Dune the most are people who are most familiar with the source material and have been intimately engaged with it. I think most people were aware this was Part 2 and saw the first part, and were able to understand a lot more of what the underlying message is. You seem to be the outlier.

Haven't seen Dune Part 2 yet, but I do wish Denis would leave the Dune-verse and go back to making smaller scale crime/psychological thrillers like Prisoners and Sicario.

Shoo fucking loves himself some Dune as he just argued for the second time against the exact same comments Ph made summer of 2022 about Dune part 1.

Disappointed in LK though, he should know better.

I mean, yes, the movies are fucking amazing, but I also enjoy correcting people who are wrong.

Dune 2 was incredible.

If you have an attention span greater than that of a five year old and enjoyed the first one, you'll more than likely enjoy the second.

So you're just doing cultural appropriation now, huh Turf?

i held off on seeing dune 1 until i read the book, so i watched the movie soon after

i just remember feeling like 1) I would have had a hard time keeping up with the movie if I hadn't read the book, 2) the movie was fine, but not up to the hype that had generated by the time I saw the movie -- I think this is because a lot of the appeal of the book is about the socio-political and religious tensions that are hard to portray in a movie; it's a story that I think lends itself better to books and 3) kinda annoyed at the expansion of Zendaya's character to give her more screen time -- she's a great performer, so I get it, but that character is mostly in the second half of the story

I'm also NOT into Timothee Chalamet, so I was predisposed to be a hater

technical achievement is impressive, but I'm in no hurry to see dune 2
