2023-24 Wake Forest Basketball Season - 21-14 (11-9) - KP#29 / NET#43

If we win both this week I'll be annoyed if we're not in. I don't think the ACC tourney will get any consideration unless we win it, but undefeated at home would be a big deal. I'd understand sticking us in Dayton as punishment for our neutral/road record, but we got pretty screwed in the Alondes/LaRavia year. It'd suck to finish what, top 25 Kenpom, and not get in - basically we'd be nearly setting records in 2 of 3 years for best team left out. Especially when NC State got in last year.

If Pitt wins out (at home against FSU and NCSU) and we win out then they get the 4 seed, as they win the H2H, UNLESS Cuse beats Clemson and we finish in a threeway tie. We win that and get the 4.
Also helped if GT beats VA, which is either unlikely or a lock depending on who you’re talking to

If we win the next two and are left out, we would have to be the only major conference school to go undeafeted on their home court to be left out of the tourney. So that feels like a thing that should happen to us. Deacon blues

Obviously I’m hoping we get in but it’s hard to feel too aggrieved if we don’t given these road performances against largely mediocre-to-terrible teams. We may need Cam Lemons to write a letter to the committee explaining how those games don’t matter.

Random thought of the day - I’ve noticed after bad losses or collapses that sometimes the players or player families get mad when the fans are frustrated or speak out against failure. I dislike when that narrative seeps into their heads and instead of focusing on taking the next step forward people get focused on the comments and clapping back at the “haters” who are often simply pointing out the obvious. I hope that doesn’t happen to this Deacs team as we fight to stay perfect at home and earn a berth to the field of 68.
There definitely seemed to be a lot of players and families "victory lapping" a bit early post-Duke W.

This season has been an enthusiasm killer for me. So many missed opportunities. I keep holding out hope but then this last week happens.

I've already given up any hope that one of my kids might like to watch a game. i am not seeing signs of improvement. just the same lack of focus and attention to detail late game. It's just not worth the time commitment any longer. After the lost decade, this season may finally break me of my interest in watching the deacs.

I would be willing to bet a substantial sum there will be little to no mention of the undefeated home record, but all about how poor we played on the road as the true measuring test vs. other bubble teams and it will cost us if we don't win 3 more games to finish the season.

Now that we are in this extremely tight situation it’s so obvious how dumb this narrative was the whole season.
and yet...if we win the next two home games then we likely DO make it, so I don't think they were necessarily wrong, even though it was frustrating to keep reading those comments right after losses on the road. Especially the "this was never the path", which is a not intelligent narrative, but I think I'm more annoyed by the people who keep harping about THE PATH on here when they could have been right all along.

Pretty sure an undefeated home P6 team has never been left out, nor has a top 30 KP team. Of course there are always records to be broken, but we are in pretty good shape given everything that's happened/how good we are at home.

They were not right, no matter what. Those losses mattered, and they mattered a lot. There is no "Path". The path is to win games and get in the tournament at the best seed possible, and to act like all the ones we let go didn't matter was so so stupid. They all mattered, and even more so now. If anything, I'd say they are more wrong now. We do not control our own destiny, if we won a couple of those, we are worried about seed, not the first four in/out.

I guess my perspective is simply that we were never a sure fire tournament team so capitalizing on winnable games is critical. Those narratives about THE PATH and stuff also assumed that everything would go as projected through the end of the season. We saw this week that obviously did not happen. We probably aren’t even having this conversation is we went 1/2 this week and pulled out one of the other road games. I’m glad we still have a reasonable shot but it’s awfully dicey considering the chances we’ve had.
