Cincinnati-Xavier brawl!

Not sure how you never heard this. When Skip was our coach we were routinely called thuggish by opposing fans. Duke fans especially went on and on about how we were coached to be dirty.

I heard it plenty while Skip was our coach.

It's true, unfortunately.

It's true that people said it, but on the whole it was a bunch of BS. They just didn't like getting their ass beat for the most part.

1. "The Mangler" quote was Pete Gillen trying to work on the zebras before 1 of our games with them to get fouls called on Songaila, who had a penchant for getting in foul trouble. That's all it was, and our fan base really overreacted to that thing.

2. My friends from other schools include folks primarily from Md, UVA, VT, GT and UNC. Never heard a peep from any of them about us being thugs over the last decade plus except for a couple well deserved comments about Chas.

3. As for Dick, I've met exactly 2 Dick grads in my lifetime who I've either liked or at least been able to tolerate, and neither of them ever complained to me about Wake hoops being thuggish. And I'm willing to bet any of those Dickies y'all have heard this crap from prolly thought all those non-calls on the mugging of CP3 in Durham were completely justified. Most Dickies have zero perspective when it comes to watching basketball. Enough said.

Of course thats how he got the name, but it was true. He didnt just foul you, he made sure to get his money's worth. I cant count the number of times opposing fans would come to the old boards and complain about how dirty Songaila was.

Yeah, he did tend to get you good if he got you on the defensive end, but I don't ever recall him cheap shotting opponents. And I swear half his fouls were charges picked up whenever he got the ball at the high post and tried to drive the length of the lane. I remember criticizing both Skip and Dave for not limiting him to 1 power dribble in half court sets.

Questions:

Why did Coach Mack have all 5 of his starters in this heated game after going up 19 with 2 minutes left and up 21 with 1 minute remaining, eh ????

Goes both ways, Hondo: Cronin had his guys in, too.

Gates, in his defense, delivered a pretty great apology. Cincy may not put their money where their mouth is, but they're good at damage control. That's more than you can say about the X these days.

Totally not what I expected, but in my opinion, Cincy has come out of this fracas looking much better than Xavier.

Heard on the radio that an Ohio prosecutor is considering filing charges against some of the players.

Strick -

Cronin had 3 in but Yup, 2-3 too many.

If the refs failed/didn't try to head this off both coaches should have by meeting before the start of the 2nd half and agreeing to sternly warn their respective teams to knock-off the talk and posturing.

With the above done, once the game was obviously over @2 minutes, should have been Mack's move to call TO and clear his bench which would have signaled Cronin to clear his and settle the air.

IMO, both coaches should be suspended without pay for 10 games !

Subject: XAVIER NEWSLETTER

I wanted to take a second to reach out to you regarding the events that occurred following our game with the University of Cincinnati last Saturday.

As we hopefully demonstrate each week with our newsletter, the relationship we have with coaches all across the globe is important to us. We have over 30,000 coaches on our email list - coaches in 50 states and 15 different countries. 99.999% of you we will never have the pleasure of meeting face to face. With only 3 scholarships a year to offer, regrettably the odds are pretty slim that you have a player that has attended Xavier, or will attend Xavier.

Even with that said, the relationship MY program has with YOUR program is something that is of the upmost of importance to me personally. Our newsletter program is meant to serve as a small token of respect for the game of basketball. In an industry that is often built on being “better than the other guy”, our newsletter and the relationship we have with you is our attempt at a direct counteraction to that unfortunate attitude that oftentimes pervades this business. We place tremendous value on helping one another and an even greater value on what each of you individually thinks of us.

I walked off the floor of the Cintas Center two days ago and gathered with my staff in the coaches’ locker room. Amidst all of the chaos, my thoughts immediately went to the impression we have created on the 30,000 programs whose relationship we truly value. I thought about the lockerrooms across the country that might have a Xavier quote tacked up. I thought about a coach who might have named a UOOB play “XAVIER” after finding it in our newsletter. I thought about each and every one of your players watching what had transpired and I was immeasurably regretful.

I hope you continue to allow our program to have a relationship with yours through our newsletter. I wish I had the opportunity to call everyone we are in contact with each and every week and apologize directly about what occurred. I assure you our program will VERY QUICKLY return to being a positive example for high school, grade school and AAU programs around the world.

Again, please accept my deepest of apologies to you, your staff, your team and school. What you saw Saturday was not Xavier Basketball and I can assure you that you will never see it again.

Uh, so, he's saying, "Hey, we butchered 'em on Saturday and had our hands full at the end. It looked bad, but don't burn this bridge, guys! Oh, and we're sorry."

Is that about right?

Well there was the Vytas pick in Atlanta.

Josh Howard had such an attitude our own fan base called him a team cancer during his soph year.

Of course, our current NBA superstar was not a choir boy.

Just saying ..

Pretty much. Very weak.

It appears he is more concerned with ensuring his recruiting pipeline remains unharmed than what transpired Saturday.

Yeah, the differences between the way that Cincinnati has handled this vs. Xavier are stunning. I'm actually fine with that 6-game suspension because of how well Gates handled himself today...

It's not like he hit some guy in the balls or something.

Brings back memories of Luke Witte getting kneed in the balls and kicked in the face (scratched cornea) at Minnesota. Minnesota thugs included Corky Taylor, Ron Behagan and former Padre/Yankee/Twin Dave Winfield!

Luke Witte is now a minister in Charlotte.

So what you're saying is Odom recruited "AAU thugs" too?

Reff will love that.

Ask John Chaney what he thinks about Wake's ballers, especially under Odom. He openly called our foreign players thugs, referring to Vid and Songailla. But I think it was more a product of we played tough slow down defense under Odom.
