The Official OGBoards Running (and Cycling) Thread: (Insert Season Here)

Going to try this again since no one offered up any help the last time around.

I am looking to get a heart rate monitor. Any suggestions on a particular one you like and why?

I will be using it for weight training, running and cardio work at the gym. My phone has GPS, and I wear it as my music player when I run, so I wouldn't necessarily need GPS in the watch/hrm, but if there is a compelling reason to have it, let me know.

I have looked at some in the store and online, but the sheer number of them is overwhelming. Hoping someone with experience here can point me in the direction of two or three preferred ones to consider.

Since you're just looking at HRM and not GPS necessarily, I highly recommend the Polar line. (shocker) REI has them and a decent selection of various models; I can't remember the specific model number right now that we got for J's dad (I want to say R 70), but he loves it and uses it for basically the same thing. I'll double check when I get home and come back to update this. Bonus, the one I'm talking about is black/gold! (black band w/ gold stripe around it and on the bezel)

I injured myself running a few weeks ago and have been sitting around waiting for it to get better. After two weeks with no improvement, I finally sucked it up and went to the doctor. Turns out I have a torn abdominal muscle. It looks like I will have a few more weeks of very limited physical activity ahead of me. I was just starting to get back into good shape, too... This sucks!

Thanks LBE! I'll narrow down by brand and look at those.

Just added a new race for February--The Crystal Coast Half Marathon in Morehead City/Atlantic Beach on 2/25. Its a pancake flat marathon with 2 exceptions--the bridge to and from Atlantic Beach. Its a lot of down and back, but at least that allows you see to a lot of other racers. Its still relatively small though--only 281 finishers in the half last year.

It should be a fun race, but I'm a little nervous about running a half-marathon, marathon, and a 10k within 5 weeks of each other and still running for time. I might just have to take it easy for this half.

I'm 80% sure we got him the FT7, if not that then the FT4. Either one of those is a decent bump up from the FT1.

...I think we did FT7 for him and FT4 for his sister.... either way, both have been very happy with them.

Got in 5 miles on Emerald Isle yesterday and have 13 planned up Atlantic beach today.

I'll post this here too, since you guys probs get stuff like this:

ugh, so when I stretch my left calf i get pain in the back of my heal that's a sharp/tingling feeling, wtf is that.

It's literally in the back of my heal, underneath my achilles tendon. I'm guessing it's related to that since it only happens when my leg is fully extended and I flex my foot up (tightening the calf muscle).

A most embarrassing typo for a Carolina alumnus.

My friends and I all ran the UNCC 5K this morning. I think this is the 4th year in a row that the weather has been horrible (cold and rainy). We also had the first overall female, and everyone in our group won an age group award besides me

:foreveralone:

If anyone's interested, the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix is on ESPN2 right now. The winner of the high school boys' mile is a Reagan High School student (Pfafftown) and is coached by a Wake grad.

ETA - I'm not sure what time the race is on, but the meet coverage lasts from 2-4pm

Wake has had a couple of athletes that are former New Balance winners.

volunteered at the Tallahassee Marathon this morning then went out and ran a quick 8. feeling really good going into the race next weekend

Anyone ever get bloody nipples from running? Went out for a 7 mile run today in cold (45 degrees), wet weather, and upon returning I discovered I had big bloody circle on my shirt over my left nipple. I don't exactly have a rock hard chest so I figure the jiggling combined with cold nipples combined with a wet (and thus slightly heavier) rough t-shirt made for a perfect storm of chafing. Still pretty raw as I sit here. I've heard of runners putting band-aids or anti chafing balm on their nipples before longer runs, so I may have to start doing that. Either that or start doing lots of pushups to try to minimize the jigglage.

I've never dealt with that - thank goodness for sports bras - but lots of guys use Body Glide to help. Tech fabric t-shirts, like dri-fit, are better than cotton too.

BodyGlide. do it. seriously. i put it on the nips (and some other areas) pretty much anytime i go longer than 3. life-saver

Yeah in HS I had this one Wake t-shirt that would chafe the shit out of my left nipple if I ran wearing it in the rain. Wet cotton on moving body = bad news. Totally normal thing to have happen, though.

Band aids are essential...I doubt if the jigglage has anything to do with it since I have really fit friends that it happens to.

Today I'm going to start running to and from the gym. Gym is only 1.4 miles from my place. I'm worried about it detracting from my strength training, but ultimately my main goal is weight loss.

Another data point: BodyGlide works for "other" places for me, but the only thing I've found that works consistently for my nips is medical tape. BodyGlide has been surprisingly good at relieving a little hot spot that my VFF's cause after 10 miles or so. My point: you may need to experiment before you find the best solution for you.
