Bruce Weber: Fired... Targeting Shaka (who says no)

ESPN Bottom Line reporting Shaka turned down Illinois job and will return to VCU next year

Yeah, I think he plans to stick around at VCU and build a national power there. That, or he is waiting for a much bigger job than Illinois. If that is the case, Wake won't be one of them unless he wants to compete with Duke and UNC. Mind you, I don't see him having the chance to coach either one of Duke and UNC, as I think Duke already knows who K's successor will be and UNC always wants to keep it in the family.

I think you are way off on your analysis. He is not going to be able to build a national power at VCU - unless you consider Butler or Gonzaga a national power because that's the ceiling. I think he probably looked at it the way anybody looks at a new job:

* Is the pay raise worth it?
* Do I want to move my family to ____________ right now?
* Can I be as excited and as successful at ____________ as I am at VCU?

Shaka has a new kid, probably more on the way, he and his wife love Richmond, in particular the soul food there. He's from an academic background/family, so based on all those things, Wake is not a definite NO. It seems slightly more likely than Illinois based on Wake being a small academic school in the ACC still in the south still with good soul food who gets to compete against Duke, UNC, Syracuse, etc... Be fun to try and beat Coach K and Coach Williams while both are still there. It's a possibility, I would think.

Even if UNC-G or VCU is on TV 3 or 4 times a year, it ain't 20 times a year. With Syracuse in the ACC, I'll be able to watch between 10 and 20 Wake games on cable TV. That's more than 3.

Well said, as I mentioned in a previous post, I believe we could afford Shaka without bankrupting ourselves. I think that Wake is actually one of the few places he'd go because Wake is completely different than any school in the country. That may appeal to him, it may not. It's essentially like coaching at an Ivy League school in the south, against great competition and with lots of resources. Duke's the only place similar and you don't want to follow a legend plus K will probably live forever.

Predictions: Mick Cronin to Illinois, Reggie Theus to Cincy. Shaka to UCONN when Cheat-houn "unexpectedly" retires this year. VCU will hire the next up-and -coming superstar. Whoever they hire we should hire after next season regardless of their results.

VCU shouldn't even have to recruit, they have like 75,000 students. Gotta be a few in there worth playing.

Does this even hold weight anymore since we don't play them both twice a year? Expansion really blows.

Dear Ron,

Call me and I'm yours.

Love,

Shaka

They had 2 points against Cincy 10 minutes into the game.

Exactly. And did you hear? FSU will be even better next year with future NBA guard Miller leading the way.

LOL - not a chance they will be better and Miller was eh, not so great lately.

I have a few questions for Shaka Smart so I can confirm he did NOT just get out-coached by Crean.

1 - Why did Reddic get 0 touches in the half court for the entire second half after Reddic knocked down a few nice jump hooks in the first half and he appeared to be their ONLY back to the basket option?

2 - Why was IU able to use a 6'8 Power Forward to guard the VCU point guard for the entire second half. I saw 1 play where the point guard got right by Watford and got in the lane and drained an open 12 footer. Was that so hard to do more than once? Or is it all so complex?

I don't necessarily think they will be better however, they will still be a tourney team.

I have never heard of a coach taking/turning down a job based on his food preferences!

Yeah, and they almost caught Cincy at the end. (unlike us when we were "Butlerized"!)..not bad vs a Sweet 16 team for a team "headed in the wrong direction". Like Mack Brown, Barnes always gets a great recruiting class...the Longhorns will be back and Rick ain't headed to Winston-Salem.....:wtf:

You obviously haven't had Richmond soul food. I haven't either but if I did I'm sure I'd do everything possible to move there.
