Official Debate Watching Thread

The thing that drives me crazy about Romney is that I think he could be a good President, if he is true to who he is. If he would get into office and be his own man, I think he could do well. But he has waffled on everything so much that I don't trust him to get a backbone once he's in office. Ala Obama.

You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Skydog Deac again

How much can Candy Crowley do when she's moderating the town hall format?

I didn't realize that was the format. BeachBummer. Well, hopefully, she can at least contain their responses to the allotted time.

I have noticed a lot Obama supporters complaining that Mitt ran all over the moderator and took liberties with the allotted time (not just on this tread but pundits as well). Obama spoke for more than 4 minutes more than Romney last night.

Who on this thread has said that?

Must be perception. Romney spoke a lot faster and was more clear and concise. Obama rambled with lots of "uhs". I bet word count shows Romney got more in.

"A lot of Obama supporters" often means rjkarl and maybe bkf.

I don't think I ever used the word "smoke", but no matter, yes, I thought Obama would do better than he evidently did.

I have only been able to find this statement that you made

Plus, Obama is going to blow him away in the debates, as well as with constant attack ads in the fall. Obama has learned well from the Kerry fiasco eight years ago.

I was thinking about that last night. Most successful business people I have ever met had been fairly impressive people. Romeny has been an ultra-successful business person yet he comes off like a boob. Last night I finally saw why he was good at what he did. He really needs to throw out all of his advisers and just be himself. He looked so comfortable last night and that was the first time he seemed relaxed.

When he was talking, agreed. When he was listening to Obama he looked weird as hell. It was like he was trying so hard to come up with the appropriate expression, but it ended up looking like a tense cross between adoration and hatred.

Agreed. And I don't think he looked relaxed at all. I'm calling for a full scale investigation by the Mormon church into Romney's caffeine intake last night -- he looked like he had about 10 cups of coffee before the debate. Is speed frowned upon by the Church? Maybe that was his loophole.

Meanwhile, Obama looked like he popped a few Ambien before the debate or followed Biden's rub one out advice.

Obama looking down at his podium is going to be one of those public speaking mistakes that is discussed in COM classes for the next 20 years...especially if somehow Obama loses this election. Terrible, terrible stage presence to look down at your podium when the other person is talking. You must know that a camera is pointed at you the entire time. Let the public see your eyes. If Obama would have just looked up for the duration of the debate the perception of who won/loss would be much different.

The teleprompter thing again? Please, post with an original opinion, not some Hannity manufactured issue. Makes you look silly and detracts from what I assume is a serious post.

It is a serious post, and I've never watched/listened to Hannity for one minute of my life. Obama with a teleprompter is one of the best public speakers in history - which is definitely a tough skill and in no way a knock on him. Many people, including a lot of politicians, cannot do it well, and I don't think I have ever seen anyone do it as well as Obama. But, it is a completely different skill than functioning in a debate setting. The teleprometer gets rid of most of the "uuhhhh"s that he was stumbling over last night as he was trying to formulate his responses. The few times that he completely ignored the question and launched into an unrelated scripted diatribe, were the few times that he was okay.

Clinton was probably the best I've ever seen away from the teleprompter. When he was asked a question, he would remain silent for about 4 seconds and you could see the wheels turning as he outlined the next 2 minutes in his head before he said a word. Then he would launch into it and flow through it without hesitation like natural speech.

Edited for RJ-like spelling. Why doesn't IE9 have a built-in spellcheck like Safari?

Clinton was great in any public speaking setting. Man has a gift with words.

Ok, I buy your sincerity. But never have understood why Obama is held to a higher standard than Bush. Obama sans teleprompter is eloquent next to Curious George.

Why Obama didn't listen to Biden telling him to channel his inner Rudy Guiliani, "Noun, verb, 47%" boggles my imagination. If Obama had put 47% into every answer, nothing Romney said would have any traction.

It will be interesting to see if the national newscasts challenge Romney's BS and if they do if it has any impact.

Obama sounded mildly retarded during his closing statements. I can't wait to listen to the next eight years of Romney Derangement Syndrome from you loser libs.
