'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

MDMH - curious to get your perspective since you are the most progressive person I've seen on theses boards. Could you get behind a split dem/GOP ticket (assuming dem at the top and a moderate R in the veep slot)? Or would that ticket likely move you to support Green Party or another progressive candidate?

Obviously this all depends on who the candidates are but I am genuinely curious to hear your thoughts and how you think other progressives might react to the scenario above.

Obviously if that were the ticket against a more conservative republican ticket I would vote for it, but it would be hugely disappointing.

Fwiw, my own take in this question is that in the primary, I won’t support any Democrat that says they will seek out a Pub running mate to unify the country. But, in the General Election, I am voting for the most viable non-Trump nominee.

you're the only one

ITC the hivemind. Didn't realize you were a crowdsourced account. Already dreaming up hypothetical centrist support for a hypothetical split ticket. If you wonder why I refuse to debate with you in good faith, it's because you are so obviously a closeted conservative. If it wasn't a claim to pragmatism you will always find a reason to discourage progressive ideology because you are conservative.

MDMH turning into the jh of the ??????? party before our very eyes

links to my discouragement of [MDMH approved] progressive ideas? your one and only response to every question is: if it's not what I believe, you're a Republican

Good to remember that this whole little debate between us started because you just couldnt abide my rejection of a hypothetical split ticket. I have absolutely no faith in the type of political "compromise" you want, because I know it's just going to result in more wealth inequality, means testing, and more middle eastern muslims being drone striked or starved with economic sanctions.

it will be if you forever run all or nothing campaigns

oh brother

i anxiously await the rolling tide of progressive candidate wins that you approve of. Even your singular example Bernie Sanders punts on issues like gun control because he's not insane

I'm not going to put much effort in convincing a galaxy brained genius such as yourself who somehow believes that low enthusiasm Hillary voters caused Hillary to lose. Trump is apparently my fault because I didn't pop a chub for Hillary in the voting booth. Sure thing.

Regarding the "tide of progressive candidates", you might want to check out how many of them are opposed and primaried by the party.

i'll take a list of local and state electoral losses where the big bad Dem party plays an insignificant role in quashing candidates who would've probably beaten a Republican. i'm literally begging to be proved wrong

or where progressive candidates have had major successes?

The 2018 midterms are fast approaching. First up: Primary fights for both parties’ future.

Neither party is anointing candidates as it used to. White House intervention has had mixed results in recruiting Senate candidates; in nine of 10 Trump-won states where a Democratic senator is up for reelection, Republicans are facing free-for-alls with no obvious front-runners. (The exception is Missouri, where Attorney General Josh Hawley is favored to beat three insurgent challengers.)
...

Both parties are facing competitive primaries in the Midwest and South as well as in some of the largest swing states. In Florida, Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) won Trump's backing in a gubernatorial primary against Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. A race that Republicans hoped could serve as a coronation for Putnam has been scrambled as Las Vegas Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, hedge fund heiress Rebekah Mercer and Wyoming investor Foster Friess piled in behind DeSantis.

Bliss said his super PAC would invest in several races, with the goal of helping the most left-wing Democrats win their nominations.

"It's going to be the most fun project for us," said Bliss. "Our donors love the idea — they're calling us and asking, 'What about this primary, what about that primary?' "

^^The guy running Paul Ryan's Super PAC. Careful what you wish for, bud.

It's strange that the primary election period is so short but the general election period is so long. Most people who are actually going to vote know who they're going to vote for in the general. They have no clue about the primary candidates.

The past:

__________________________R______(MIDDLE)______D_______________________________

Hey guys! Let's compromise.

2017:

____R____________________________(MIDDLE)_____D________________________________

Republicans: "Dems won't meet us half way!

If Sheriff Joe gets the nod, maybe AZDeac could become the junior Senator from AZ.

McCaskill raises $2.9 million in last quarter of 2017, record $11.8 million for year

sheesh

McCaskill raised $2.9 million in the last three months of the year, her campaign spokeswoman, Meira Bernstein, told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. McCaskill, D-Mo., had about 107,000 donors, of which about 90,000 had not given before, McCaskill’s campaign reported.

But McCaskill enters 2018 as one of the Senate’s most vulnerable Democrats. She is seeking re-election in a state that voted for President Donald Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton by 19 percentage points. Trump has promised to campaign for Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley.

District PVI Representative
CA-23 R+14 Kevin McCarthy
CA-01 R+11 Doug LaMalfa
CA-50 R+11 Duncan Hunter
CA-04 R+10 Tom McClintock
CA-08 R+9 Paul Cook
CA-42 R+9 Ken Calvert
CA-22 R+8 Devin Nunes
CA-48 R+4 Dana Rohrabacher
CA-45 R+3 Mimi Walters
CA-49 R+1 Darrell Issa
CA-10 Even Jeff Denham
CA-25 Even Steve Knight
CA-39 Even Ed Royce
CA-21 D+5 David Valadao

In the current environment, the bottom seven on the list have to be seriously thinking about their future. In a wave year, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is probably safe, but all the others could conceivably face a tough reelection fight and even those in heavily Republican districts might not be safe on account of angry suburbanites looking for someone to punish for raising their taxes. Democrats need to pick up 24 seats to capture the House, and a decent fraction of those might come from California. (V)
