2017-18 Men's College Basketball Thread (NWT)

Seems like TheReff is always telling us we wouldn’t like it if refs actually called all the fouls actually committed. Guess they wouldn’t wanna interrupt the flow of this game.

What TheReff is always telling you all is to quit your damn bitching and realize you have to play the game as it lays out. They don't care who wins and are graded on every call in the game and yes they do miss calls, but far less than how many shots and FT's that players miss. In this case Wofford won the game on the floor. Their coach didn't whine & bitch and moan, they just played the game and he has beaten 2 ACC schools.

“Didn’t know Wake’s QB played basketball,” said fans of FB teams left in Wake’s wake.

So do you think Carolina had actually only committed about 3 fouls in the second half before they started intentionally fouling in the last few minutes?

UNC beats UT and then loses to a bad team.

Wake has already lost to a bad team (multiple times, in fact)... Hopefully that means we will beat UT.

Wish the Deacs had Fletcher Magee. That dude has ice water in his veins

Aside from (maybe) the loss to Drake (on a neutral floor), the UNC loss at home to Wofford is worse than any we have had.

Not equating us to UNC in any way... Just pointing that out.

If you were to choose a current Deac to hit clutch free throws, who would it be? I would go with Crawford, but Wilbekin, Childress, and Woods would all be good options. They are all really good shooters, but they've all missed clutch free throws over the past 2 years.

So are you saying the world isn't falling if a superior team loses to an inferior team before ACC play?

This year Crawford. Dude is shooting 92% or something gaudy. Last year I would go Wilby/Woods with the close 1-2.

True. Would be easier to deal with one bad loss (it does happen to a lot of teams - Kansas lost to #130 Washington, Notre Dame lost to #119 Ball State, Florida lost to #91 Loyola), but WF lost to 3 lesser teams that it was heavily favored against. In retrospect, the GA Southern loss was not that bad as they are 9-3 and #88, but it will be really hard to recover from the collective impact of the GA Southern loss AND the Liberty loss (#144) AND the Drake (#203) loss.

On a scheduling related note, Houston (WF's 4th loss) has played well so far. They have beaten Arkansas #22 and Providence #61, in addition to #62 WF. Houston is 10-2, and they have set themselves up to get an at large bid with a solid conference season, if they don't win the AAC tourney.

Of course. Those 3 losses together are much worse than UNC losing to Wofford.

Just pointing out that shit happens.

Looking back, the way we lost to GA Southern was excruciating after leading the entire game. Would like to have that one back more than any other.
Liberty was an ugly, ugly loss, but it could be dismissed as an anomaly without the 2 losses that bookended it.
Drake loss inexcusable and embarrassing.

I'd feel "better" about those losses if our wins were better than:

308
109
93
233
244
158
172

Our schedule has been Charmin soft.

True, but all that is about to change in a big way:

19 games left
16 against teams ranked #81 or higher
10 against teams #35 or higher

The schedule is particularly tough on the front end of conference play. Between Saturday's game against #27 Tennessee and the Valentine's Day game against #111 GT, WF will play 15 straight games where it is currently projected to be an underdog, except for a home game against Cuse on January 3, when WF is projected as a 2 point favorite, but a lot of the games are expected to be close (e.g., KP projects a 74-73 TN win on Saturday). Deacs will need to hold their own during that grueling stretch, before the schedule eases at the end as WF last 5 games are:

Home GT #111
Home State #81
Away Pitt #163
Home ND #24
Away GT #111

UT game is a huge opportunity heading into ACC play. Hope the team comes out fired up and ready to play.
