2018-2019 NHL Thread – Thunderstorm Warning

Suddenly the Devils are right in the hunt for a WC spot, just one point behind the Jackets with one less to play. Detroit's magic number is still 5 after losing to the Habs tonight.

Hockey is a rough game. RIP to this headless Blues player

Not exactly news, but Winnipeg is still trying to run Evander Kane out of town:

Evander Kane won’t say if he wants to be traded

Also, the Panthers beat the Stars last night with Roberto Luongo in net. If the Stars had won, the Canucks would have been officially eliminated from the playoffs. Luongo is still very good at Twitter:

Strombone @strombone1
You're welcome @VanCanucks ! Glad I could help! #stillonpayroll #15%

oddest thing in the caps/blues game. may have been troy brower but fell oddly into the boards and was dazed. as he was slowly gliding back to his bench, collided head on with another caps player and they both went down. like a bad car wreck

Brouwer was down for a good 20+ seconds. He was completely out of it and nailed Marcus Johansson, who was breaking fast out on the PP. Both guys are on the bench in the second, and have skated.

The Coyotes tied it up with 15 seconds left in Columbus. Both teams get a point and help their playoff chances.

Detroit wins and needs just 1 point (or any Caps loss) to make the playoffs. WC spots are still up for grabs, though as the #1 spot could go to the Wings, Jackets or Flyers at this point.

Columbus only needs one win (any variety) OR two OT/SO losses OR one loss from New Jersey and Washington to clinch their playoff spot. All three squads have three games remaining.

And Montreal is the lone Canadian squad in the SCP. Tough year for Canada.

Soooooo Jaroslav Halak apparently told Caps coach Adam Oates that he didn't want to play against the Blues last night. Oates, who I am now 100% guessing won't be back next year, told the media Holtby was playing in place of Halak because Halak was too emotional to play against his former team. This isn't going well...

From Jaro's agent: "On Jaroslav Halak, Jaro never at anytime said he didn't want to start against St. Louis. A private conversation between a player and coach should stay private and not be discussed with the media. I am bewildered that a coach would break that trust especially when those comments the coach publicly attributed to Jaro are not accurate. It's the coach who makes the decision on who plays in the games, not the players."

On the one hand, it's hard to imagine Halak didn't make those statements. And if he did, that's really unacceptable. On the other hand, pretty shitty to release that info to the world (unless you really think starting your 2nd string goalie in a must-win game takes you from on the hot seat to halfway out the door).

Likely playoff preview tonight between the Pens and the Wings. Letang is back for the Pens after his stroke. Also, the Sharks and Ducks are playing tonight as the top two teams in the Pacific. The Jackets and Stars are meeting up as the two #2 Wild Card teams, and a loss would hurt the Stars much more than the Jackets.

So after losing badly to the Blues several games ago the Wild held a closed door meeting without the coaches. Since then they have:

Beaten Phx and LA on the road.
Lost in OT at Chicago
Whipped the Pens 4-0 at home
Beaten Winnipeg 1-0 on the road
Scored in the final minute to tie the Bruins and then won in a shootout

Their reward for this points streak, a potential matchup with the Blues in the first round if they happen to tie or beat the Blues tonight at home. The Wild is 0-4 against the Blues this year and the games have not really been competitive. The whole idea of getting the 7 slot was to avoid St. Louis.
