2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Cool but that’s not exactly what he said. Not really worth arguing over... unless you want to revisit Pete’s “America has a lot to learn from Israel” comments.

I wrote a best-selling book. If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too.

You can argue semantics of word-for-word quotes, but that’s not a great quote.

And I agree with you it’s not worth arguing over, I honestly don’t give a shit about Bernie’s finances. But as the guy who is speaking to the income equality of America as one of his main campaign points, it’s super tone deaf.

Bernie: “Stupid poors need to write more books.”

Not triggered. If you want to make a million bucks selling socialism then I am all for it. If you want to actually implement it then we have a problem. Bernie is probably going to be cool retiring after his attempted 2020 run with his millions. As long as what he does up until that point doesn't get Trump re-elected then good on him.

Just to be clear, no one in the democratic field now, or in 2016, is, or was, selling actual socialism. They were/are selling things like socialized medicine and education but we’re talking about the US government taking over ownership of Exxon, AT&T, and proctor and gamble.

Which is a weird thing to have to explain on a message board consisting primarily of college-educated people, but here we are...

Cable news really killed the public sphere.

Everybody famous writes a book. That’s just what famous people do. National politicians are all famous and (mostly) rich in part because they have national recognition. If you don’t think Mayor Pete is going to monetize his newfound national media cachet, then I don’t know what to tell you.

Mayor Pete wrote his book already.

I agree by the way. I don’t care about Bernie’s finances as long as its legal. Republicans love this stupid logic that if you have any money, you can’t advocate for people who don’t.

The logic isn’t stupid if your goal is to keep impoverished Americans in poverty. If people with means suddenly start advocating for the poor, then things might get better. But if you can turn the poor against those advocating for them precisely because they have money, then then purity test makes it so only other poor people can advocate. But they can’t advocate because they don’t have the means. And then the cycle perpetuates.

It’s kind of brilliant. Evil, but kind of brilliant.

If there is anything that academic leftists and neoliberals have in common, it's being completely out of touch with the working class. You know, the blue collar people (disproportionately POC) who wash dishes and clean motel rooms. It's not much of a surprise that college grads and urban elites dont understand populism and domestic economic protectionism, because they statistically dont need it.

Approximately 75% of academic jobs are off the tenure track. Many of them make less money than the blue collar workers you cite here.

he's not claiming to be a socialist, though

Then Bernie needs to clarify what it means when he refers to himself as a socialist. I can only assume that when you refer to yourself as a socialist the long term goal of your policy agenda is to implement socialism.

Why not just declare himself a social liberal because that is what you are referring to? What is the distinction then between Warren and Bernie as what you described sums them both up? Warren however has been MUCH more clear over where she stands on private markets. Bernie has dodged the question and the liberal media has given him a pass.

Boards take though: Stupid whatamount for assuming someone who calls himself a socialist is a socialist.

the guy who claims to be a democratic socialist who was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists

itc, as our resident socialism expert, are socialist and democratic socialist ideologies the same thing ?

the question, to literally everyone else, is "does it matter?"

and the answer is no, no it doesn't
