2020 Democratic Presidential Primary

The stuff after he realized that his only path to the presidency was through the Dem party? I mean, sure, if you also believe he now suddenly believes stop and frisk is bad and we should raise the minimum wage.

The reality is Bernie will get destroyed by Trump. It may not be as bad as Mondale vs. Reagan, but it will likely be as bad as Daddy Bush vs. Dukakis. If Warren was gaining strength like Bernie appears to be, she'd be a runaway winner.

At some point in the next 90-120 days, Obama may need to hold a summit with candidates and others to put forth a strategy to destroy Trump.

I don’t understand this prediction that Bernie would get destroyed by Trump. Bernie performed really well in the Rust belt states in the 2016 primary, states trump needs to win to thread the needle again. He really appeals to a lot of “Reagan Democrats” and blue collar union types. Why are you and ChrisL so convinced he is headed for a slaughter?

I am not a Bloomberg fan. But if one attacks him. why is Bernie off limits?

It's not just Chris and me. There are a wide-range of articles from USA Today to WSJ to NYMAG to Slate and many hundreds of others agree.

How come Trump is attacking almost everyone other than Bernie? Why is Trump tweeting good things for Bernie? Why is Trump stirring up Bernie Bros with "Bernie got robbed in 2016" and not to let him get robbed again.

Trump is drooling to run against Bernie as are troubled Republican Senators. Bernie will keep McConnell in the majority.

If Bernie is so strong, why hasn't even beaten Pete by more than 2% in NH or gotten as many delegates in Iowa?

BTW, the ONLY things I want Bloomberg to do is to spend well into nine figures for Dem Senate candidates and to attack Trump relentlessly all summer.

Barring a deluge of shit, I don't see any path for Bernie to beat Trump. A 78 yo socialist is more of a Trump wet dream than a porn star after his wife gives birth.

I don't think it's that Trump wants to run against Bernie. His plan is to ramp up dissatisfaction among the democrats. If he can heighten animosity among dem candidates, there is more of a chance that some will stay home in the general. Rightly or wrongly, he views the Bernie base as the most susceptible to being "my candidate or no one" and is moving to disparage the other candidates and play up the "DNC is rigged against Bernie" angle.
 
A big part of the GOP's game plan to win elections now is not to just gin up anger or fear or enthusiasm in their own base, but to divide and dispirit the Democrats as much as possible. Encourage third-party bids by disgruntled progressives or liberals, pay for ads for more radical candidates in Senate or House or other state primary races around the country so they can win the Democratic nomination over what they perceive as more electable centrist/moderate Dems (which is happening in the US Senate Democratic primary here in NC), and Trump's tweets about how Bernie is being cheated by the DNC again, and other tweets about Democrats, and other GOP activities, are all designed to divide the Democrats as much as possible so they won't unite in the fall campaign against him. It's one of the reasons that Fox and other right-wing media will quickly jump on any sign of division in the Democratic ranks and play it up. The days of one party staying out of the other party's internal business (especially when it comes to nominating candidates) is over, and actually has been for awhile as far as Republicans are concerned. The GOP is really good at playing these kinds of games. The Democrats, not so much.

That still doesn’t really a answer why he is certain to loose. Just because some news paper say he will, I am ask why they think he will. Also Trump may be eager to run against him, but as others are noting he may also be trying to drive a wedge into the democratic base and sew dissatisfaction and distrust. So I ask again, why, given his support among blue collar voters and union members is he supposedly going to trounced by Trump in the fall? Trump can’t win with out threading the needle in the rust belt and Bernie has strong appeal in Michigan and PA.

I'm defending telling the whole story.

One also has to ask why Trump isn't attacking Bernie. Bernie is the easiest Dem candidate for Trump to attack. He has the most and most obvious soft targets that can rile people against and widen Trump's base, but Trump is leaving him alone while attacking all other Dems.

Hell, Trump is all but commiserating with Bernie Bros about getting screwed out of winning in 2016 and telling them to be worried about getting screwed this time. Trump hasn't said anything like that to any other Dem who is running.

In fact, Trump has attacked many former supporters and employees mercilessly who haven't kowtowed to him 100%, but he isn't doing that to Bernie.

Over the past four plus years, few have been as relentlessly attacking Trump as Bernie has, yet Trump is treating him with kid gloves. Why?

The only reason Trump does anything is to further Trump. But he doesn't attack Bernie when Bernie is the easiest of targets. Why?
 
Real Clear Politics (RCP) today has Trump's job approval rating down to less than five points underwater in their average of national polls (46% approve, 51% disapprove.) That's his best showing since the first few weeks after he took office. It's a long way to November, but between all the Democratic infighting and this, it's looking good for Trump right now.

Obviously, I'd vote for Bernie, but Trump will destroy him in the election. It will be a massacre.

not sure i buy the fear = attacks thing. trump hasn't really attacked any of the candidates except biden and his big gamble on Hunter might not even matter.
