2021 Football Coaching Carousel

No kidding, what’s the point in coaching some mediocre program at 70+ years old.

He's 70+ living in Miami. He was going to be there anyway. May as well coach some hoops too.

I guess when I think about it he really hasn’t made a crazy amount of money since he only went to Miami very late in his career. Still just seems like a really taxing job at that age, during a pandemic for a program that just isn’t going to be very good in the near term.

He's been there for 10 years. Not sure what "crazy" money is but he should be able to retire very comfortably.

Obviously anyone who has been an ACC head coach for any amount of time could retire comfortably. I was just trying to say relative to some of these guys who become P5 head coaches in their late 40s/early 50s. He was already pretty much retirement age when he got the Miami job.

Among the names being thrown around for the VT job:

- PJ Fleck
- Shane Beamer
- Charles Huff (Marshall HC)
- Jamey Chadwell
- Byron Leftwich (Bucs OC)
- Brian Daboll (Bills OC)
- Barry Odom (Former Mizzou HC; Arkansas DC)
- Hugh Freeze
- Billy Napier
- Bill O'Brien (after Sark's recent run, might pump the brakes on the Bama OC)

That’s what everybody has been saying about Eric Bieniemy too.

So Miami and VT are hiring. Duke seems likely. That’s 3 out of the Coastal. The Atlantic is probably all staying put unless someone leaves.

A TON of openings this year. Hope we don't end up needing to look for a replacement this cycle.

Different sport, but further proof that hiring Forbes when we did was shrewd... Only opening in the cycle and pretty much the most coveted target. Not sure we get him a year later.

Current openings:

USC
LSU
Washington
Washington State
TCU
VT
Akron
FIU

GA Southern hired Clay Helton. UCONN hired Jim Mora. Still two games left in 2021 regular season.

Diaz may get another year. Miami fired their AD this morning.

Yep. Think Diaz returns. Miami is conducting a national search for their AD. By the time the hire is made, the best candidates will be gone.

1. LSU (most pressure, but most upside)
2. USC
3. Washington (Petersen showed you can make it a contender)
4. TCU ( Texas recruits and will be the top 2 team in the future Big 12)
5. VT
6. WSU
7. Akron
8. FIU

All these changes, some good assistants and admin people on the market.

If LSU was smart, they’d make a run at DeMeco Ryan. That school recruits itself but a young coach with ties to the area would absolutely rake.

"Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson: Some are wondering why Clawson's name isn't surfacing more in a very active coaching carousel. The short answer is: The right jobs haven't opened yet. Clawson, who has guided Wake Forest to a historic 9-1 start and the program's first AP top-10 ranking earlier this season, makes a lot of sense for the Hokies. He's an experienced, widely respected coach who knows the ACC and knows the state, as he was Richmond's head coach from 2004 to 2007. Although Clawson would be recruiting a broader pool of players at Virginia Tech, he has familiarity with the high school scene in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Clawson, 54, might be a Wake Forest lifer, but he also could see value in moving to a program that can consistently compete for titles. Expect Virginia Tech to take a long look at the Wake Forest coach."
