2023-24 Wake Women's Basketball (7-24) - Signed 6-2 PF/C Kennedy Moore from Montana

Didn't get to watch. What happened?
Bad turnovers, couldn't make a shot. Scored 2 points in the 2nd quarter. Probably 10 turnovers. ECU plays a 3-2 zone that traps every time the ball gets near the sidelines. We looked really good in the 3rd quarter against it then kind of went into cruise control in the 4th.

We played good defense, not that ECU's a good offensive team. Their starting 2, 4, and 5 don't shoot 3's so we were sagging off them deep into the paint (Ben Simmons esque).

What happened to Kaia?

The 2-0 Lady Deacs head to Charlottesville on Sunday to face UVa in a ridiculously early conference game. UVa has blowout wins over GW and UMBC. Last year, UVa finished 5-22 and hired Amaka Agugua-Hamilton as their new head coach. Agugua-Hamilton led Missouri State to the NCAA Tournament the last two years and made the Sweet Sixteen in 2021.

Kaia appeared to twist her ankle in a non-contact situation. Hope she's not out too long. Katie Deeble just returned to practice, so at least they will have her back.

Lady Deacs up 14-12 at the end of the 1st on ACCN.

Down 5 at the half. UVA is face-guarding Jewel making it tough to get her the ball. They are also sagging so far off Demeara clogging up the lane for a lot of our action. Would love to see Demeara take one of those shots to keep them honest. Or just take two dribbles towards the basket and make her man commit. Otherwise, she's a bit of a black hole.

UVa started the 3rd on a 12-0 run.

First game I've seen us play this season. Anyone have early first impressions of the new HC? Any noticeable changes?

Haven’t been able to watch. Just checking in. Doesn’t seem too much to ask for our bad team with a new coach to be more competitive against their bad team with a new coach.

Can't make any judgements this early I don't believe.

Judgments? No. But it’s a shame to miss a chance like this.

They mentioned during the broadcast that there will be one of these first week conference games every year chosen by reverse alphabetical order. So that’s why it was Wake vs. Virginia. Gotta say forcing Wake to play a road ACC game as the third game of the season due to “alphabetical order” is a unique way for the conference to screw Wake.

UVA was the worst team in the conference last year. Both teams with a new coach, I would have thought this would at least be a close game. UVA has some tradition and we have none. WBB coach at Wake might be the hardest D1 job in the country.

Lady Deacs up 25-24 vs. Mercer. Jewel Spear is 0-3 from the field for 0 points. She dropped 40 vs. ETSU in last year's 11 am game.

UVa brought in a grad transfer from ND who is one of their best players.

Lady Deacs up 43-36 at the end of the third. Freshman PG Kate Deeble had a huge 3rd quarter with 8 pts (3-4 fg, 2-3 3pt), 3 ast (2 threes by Summiel and a beautiful back door pass for an Andrews layup at the buzzer).

Deeble had only played 6 min vs. UVA before today. She didn't even play in the 1st half. She powered a run to take a 9 point lead without Spear in the game.

nice seeing others picking up the scoring load in a game that spear really hasn't contributed much.

Mercer isn't bad. they beat the MTSU team that ended our season last year.

Me during a Mercer 4th quarter FT: Wow, those school kids really got the message on being loud for the other team's FTs.

Me during a Spear 4th quarter FT: Nope. They're just loud.

Lady Deacs win 70-45 outscoring Mercer 45-21 in the 2nd half. That's how it's supposed to go. The bench game through big in the 3rd quarter and the starters came in and closed it out in the 4th. Summiel had 13 and 8 with 3 threes. Elise Williams had 10/5/6 on 4-4 fg, 2-2 3pt. Hinds had 7/12/2.

They head to the Bahamas next for Monday and Wednesday games against Mizzou (4-0) and Alabama (2-1). The games will be on a paysite called FloHoops.com, but you can follow games on the official site or official app.

Down 37-17 to Mizzou. Spear with 0 pts at the half again. She only took 1 shot. Williams and Harrison with 5 pts each.

Just not a good team. Frustrating that Gebbia can’t find a way to get Jewel the ball. She should have transferred if we are being honest.
