ACC Sports Journal: If Jim Grobe Is Staying, Who’s Going?

When we actually have a good football team it seems like Grobe is very hush hush and humble about it. Saying, "we are pretty good, and have a chance to be pretty good". When we are actually terrible he says, he feels great about things, couldn't be happier", etc.

It is funny how the Boards have inched closer and closer to speaking with a unified hive-mind.

We've gone from arguing about degrees of good to agreeing about how much we suck. Jettisoning the 81Deacs of the world helped too, although we've got converts like Bill George.

Clarification on the defense. It didn't improve this year. In fact, it's the 2nd worst in the Grobe era and maybe 2nd worst ever.

Year -- Scoring Defense
2012 31.8 (91)
2011 27.4 (65)
2010 35.8 (110)
2009 26.3 (65)
2008 18.3 (16)
2007 22.2 (28)
2006 15.4 (12)
2005 28.7 (77)
2004 23.0 (41)
2003 28.9 (77)
2002 25.2 (53)
2001 28.3 (77)

In 12 years under Grobe, we've scored more points than we've allowed 5 times (2002, 2006-09). 2009 was by one point.

It's clear to see that good defense and good special teams was the reason we were good from 2006 - 2008. Now that both of those suck ...

Yep. Not like it was a mystery at the time. More specifically, good defensive players and Sam Swank were the reason.

And not only did the defense keep other teams from scoring, but they also did a lot of our scoring. That and setting up short fields for FGs.

This. Some of those defenses prior to 2006 weren't very good at covering and tackling but they forced turnovers, and often timely ones. The turnovers dropped off when Hood left and they dropped off even more after Lambert left.

The 2008 BC game is the best example of this. Note that some people still blame the defense for losing this game.

We lost 24-21. The defense scored 2 TDs and a block punt gave the offense the ball at the 1. Meanwhile, Riley threw a pick six.

Exactly and Grobe seems to always call out the defense after a tough loss. I don't think Grobe expects much out of our offenses in general, and that is why Lobo is so safe here. This is not an offensive scoring problem for Grobe. He would literally be happy winning every game 7-0 with a defensive score.

Who the fuck cares if Bzzz connects with the media or fanbase?

Win some goddam basketball games an there will be an instant connection

Remember in that 2008 BC game all we had to do was convert about a 3rd and 6 and the game would have been over. We ran the stupidest lamest play that ended up being an incomplete pass short of the first down marker just so we could bring Swank in to kick his first field goal in about a month as he had been injured and of course he misses the 40 something yarder (not by much) and we all know the rest.

If JB's intention is to stay on and on, he will have to be fired at some point. This will be a really tough call for Mr Wellman.

Not if Wellman leaves before Grobe does...........

I don't see Wellman going anywhere soon. That would be your only chance to break that contract.....

I disagree. I think he is so far gone with our fanbase and most of the media that anything short of maybe winning a national title would not be enough to turn things around for him. Most people would still hate him.

So would I.

We basically had an NFL line and special teams in 2006-2008. That's why we were so good. Our offense is probably on par with what we are used to having under Lobo's inept play calling but the defense doesn't put s bandage over it anymore. We just have mediocre everything now which translates into a mediocre 5-7 record.

Pretty much. Of course anybody who pointed that out at the time took a bunch of crap for it.

We've had one of the absolute worst offenses in college football over the Grobe era and Grobe has never fired an OC.
