ALL PRAISE JOHN CURRIE FOR ACTING A YEAR TOO LATE

I'll play devil's advocate on this for a bit.

Manning fired now.

Rex Walters named interim coach. He proves to be more motivational than Danny. The team plays whole games with the kind of energy that they showed at the end of the game against NC State. Rotations are better, timeout use is more strategic, knee jerk "sit with two fouls" in first half is tempered. Etc.

Chill finds the emotion and drive to win that put a wad of gum into the Cameron seats. He is able to get some of that energy and emotion to come out in the play on the court.

Ernie wakes up and is able to impart some basketball knowledge.

Team develops a recognizable identity, both on offense and defense. Maybe match-up zone on D, Brandon actually hits Sarr with the pass on the pick n roll.

Team wins 9 games in ACC play, including plus one in tournament, followed by a close loss in the second. Just misses NCAA tournament (first four out)

That would make it hard to do anything beyond take the interim tag off Walters.

So, fire Manning and put Nestor in charge. Send him away with a nice little retirement bonus for being willing to put up with this shit the last two years. No one expects him to stay on no matter what happens. Problem solved.

If Rex Walters did that with this group, he may deserve a the head coaching job. That would be an unbelievable turnaround.

Would that scenario be all bad? You take a swing at all of the coaches you really want, and your fall back is a guy who had a miracle turn around.

How could you lose?

Or the buyout story was a planted ruse.
There is a buyout, likely a semi-sizable one given it is based on Manning's second contract, and the existence of a buyout is regardless of the veracity of the oft rumored $18 million amount.

This. Probably can sign him to a favorable contract too.

For Wellman's ego. If Danny got fired (although it would have been too late to get a top replacement), Wellman's "retirement" would have looked like Ron being fired in a package deal.

How does it help Ron's ego that MBB is shit and hopefully Currie fires Manning in March? To me it is going to make Wellman look even worse.

Makes ronnie look bad for currie to come in and fire danny. (Speaking of which has any dude that tall ever have less BDE?)

If ronnie had fired danny it looks better for him to fix his mistake and allow the new guy a fresh start with his own hire. Of course he made the wrong choice.

Exactly and it will create questions about whether Ronnie retired or was fired.

So Ron should have fired Danny, handicapped Currie with being able to find a suitable replacement, then Ron would have looked even better because MBB still would of been shit. That would have helped Ron's ego, not a 18 million dollar buyout rumor.

Ron Wellman is 71 years old and has 10 grandchildren. I'm pretty sure people are going to buy the retirement story regardless of whether Manning got fired.

Also, the 18 mil buyout rumor should really make people think Ron is a big fucking idiot for signing a contract like that with a coach with three 11-20 seasons under his belt.

It's better for his ego than to have all think he was fired and was a failure.

Everyone here already knows he is a failure. When Manning doesn't win and eventually gets fired, everyone else will know he is a failure. So he's saving face for only 1 year?

Guaranteed contracts are idiotic anyway. A coach making $2M+ a year doesn’t need the security of getting paid for not working. They just made $2M.

Yeah the whole idea that the ad created a ruse that makes the ad look like a complete fucking idiot doesn't really pass the smell test

Other than really involved fans, no one will remember a bad buyout. Everyone would remember Ron and Danny being a package firing.

It's not idiotic if you're in a competitive marketplace for the best coach, which you are. If you're a coach with options are you going to take $2 million a year guaranteed or $2 million a year non-guaranteed ?

Nobody's going to remember that. This buyout being in the news as a reason we can't fire manning has been publicized many times it has been repeated by college basketball fans all across the scope.

It's RJ. He made up a lie to sound like he was in the know and now he's making up shit to defend it. Nothing new or suprising here.
