Are the Rays going to move?

The issue is there aren't any viable alternatives for an MLB team right now. All they can do is really be patient and hope the economy turns around soon and they can get a new stadium built in Tampa. Unless they want to put a third team in New York or something.

Also, maybe the rays could have built their fanbase if Rick Scott hadn't turned down $2bil for that high speed rail from Orlando to Tampa.

Why would he take the only taxes his constituents pay to get jobs in the hardest hit sector of the economy in the area?

Sounds like a Tampa fan that is bitter about the reality, with which you say you agree. Current situation cannot continue, so what are the alternatives? Get a new building or move. Both of which have flaws, but less so than the current reality.

Also, I'm not bitter in the least. We just made the playoffs for the third time in four years battling against the two biggest economic giants in the sport. We're not losing anything next year, and we have a top 3 farm system in baseball. I've got my shades on, bro.

You can take more chances with franchise movement in other sports. The NFL will make money anywhere. And most cities have the infrastructure to house an NBA or NHL team, at least temporarily if a new stadium is necessary.

Well. we're talking MLB here. They are way more conservative in this regard than the NFL because it is such a different sport (81 games vs. 8) and they care more about tradition than the NFL. Comparing it to the NHL is laughable. How many MLS teams have moved recently. The NBA amd MLB have hugely different economic constraints. The MLB makes a ton more money.

Agreed. I'm rooting for Tampa, I think most people are. They're an underdog sticking it to the Yankees and Red Sox. That said, when your owner starts saying stuff like this its definitely troubling. It's really just a shitty situation. They aren't getting a new stadium for a long time, if ever, and I don't see attendance turning around in the Trop.

That's why I could see the team moving if another city gets their act together and makes a play for the Rays.

Is there a more overhyped city in the world than Portland OR?

"shitty phans"

LOL!

Keep those shades on bro. I'm glad you guys knocked out the sawks.

If they built a stadium near the casino and ampitheatre at I-4/I-75, that place would be full every night. No question the Seminole Tribe would kick in for it.

That's the worst location imaginable to me. Traffic already sucks there all the time. Imagine an extra 20k there a night. Put it in Channelside.

Bullshit.

Rays fans would simply concoct new excuses why they refuse to attend games.

"It's too hot out to watch baseball outdoors!"

"The stadium is too close to the interstate!"

If the Rays Nation (LOL) would put half as much effort into attending home games instead of excuse making they would fill the Trop to 90% capacity every game.

Attendance will be up again next year closer to the middle of the pack. Something needs to change economically for teh Rays to move to a new stadium or new city. No city would build the team a stadium in the current economic climate, and if they're going to build their own it'd be better to just build it in Tampa.

For someone that doesn't know enough about the situation apparently, whay is that? What is different about next year to cause better attendance?

Gotta love Fansmack. Almost as cute as Conference smack.

Every article, quote, etc. about the team going in to this year was how it was a rebuilding year, we lost 3 All-stars, etc. Then we started 0-6. From there we hung around third place the majority of the season. I expect the tenor going in to the year to be much different, and more people will be planning to go to games. Hopefully, the economy improves as well (crosses fingers).

It's an absolute joke to not have a stadium on the water down there

That was my dream. The stadium looking over the St. Pete yacht Club was gorgeous. Hate those effers that didn't let that happen.

Here's a Pic:

The "Sail" was retractable for shade in Day games and to help with the rain issue. Such a cool idea, and it looked so Gulf Coast of FL.

That was a nice idea. Not sure if it would help attendance.

Channelside would be a traffic problem, too.

Who would want to watch a baseball game in a closed arena?

ETA: referring to the current stadium.

The stadium with the sail was an awesome idea. Is it totally dead?

Funny that it seemed to come out right around the same time as the A's proposed new stadium in San Jose, which was also really different and awesome. Sad that both plans appear to be on life-support, if they're not already dead.
