I'm in the military and just got told that I'm moving to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in about two weeks.

It's 45 mins north of Kansas City. I don't know a soul and I think I'm leaning towards living in KC and sucking up the commute to work every day.

Any ideas where to live or not live? Does Kansas suck as much as I think it does?

Armydeac just left Leavenworth a year or so back. PM me your email address, and I'll give it to him. He'd be a great resource for you.

FWIW (not much, I know) I went to Leavenworth twice in about 6 months - it sucks. Bad. There really didn't seem to be much going on except in KC. From my limited experience, I think you'd enjoy living in KC much better and dealing with the commute than if you tried to live closer to base.

That said, I've had some pretty wild times in KC in the past - I remember a pretty vibrant nightlife in downtown.

I grew up in NE KS and lived in KC for a few years. To each his own, but I really enjoyed it in KC. Leavenworth sucks pretty hard. Live in KC, north of the river or Lawrence if you want a really nice college town with access to live music and hot coeds.

KS weather sucks, with tons of wind, extreme heat in the summer and pretty cold winters, but the falls are pretty nice and so is spring, when it's not tornado weather.

KC can be a pretty fun town, depending on what you're into. There's a nice new-ish downtown scene at the Power and Light District. Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Sprint Center, College Basketball Experience, WWI museum, Nelson-Atkins art gallery, Sporting KC, Royals and Chiefs if you're into masochism, nice drinking area in Westport, high-endish shopping at the Country Club Plaza, decent high-end cuisine, tons of awesome BBQ joints, obviously.

The airport blows goats and you do have to drive EVERYWHERE, though.

Just be glad you're at Leavenworth instead of Ft Riley.

Don't expect wizard of oz shit. NE KS is hilly and green. Leavenworth has gone downhill a bit since I lived there as a kid, but there are plenty of suburbs between it and KC. I'd study up on the tax burdens of both MO and KS before making a decision.

Was it a general court-martial, or just a special?

Lived in Lawrence for two years. Great city. KC is also up and coming. Not sure of the commute from Lawrence but that is where I would recommend.

Pronounce it "kan-SAW". They think its hilarious that their state name is pronounced incorrectly.

Live in KCMO, but soon moving to Kansas. Feel free to PM any questions.

Are you staying in the KC Metro? We are moving to KC soon and looking at neighborhoods in both states.

If you have a family with kids, go johnson county(for the schools).

Family, no kids= KCMO, north of the river. Cheaper, good access to kc stuff.

Single or young couple= downtown KCMO. Happening place for young professionals. Alternatively, plaza area if a young medical professional.

Stay out of Wyandotte and old Olathe.

Leawood, KS.

If you have kids and are catholic, you can live in KCMO and send them to catholic school. If you have kids/non-catholic, but don't have deep pockets for private school, you are pretty much forced to live in Kansas.

If i was single, I'd live in the Crossroads. Favorite part of KC.

Kansas City and Lawrence are both very good - very comparable to Raleigh and Chapel Hill if you want. Leavenworth is an Army town. Army towns suck.

Kansas doesn't suck. It's actually a really nice place to live, and KC has a ton of stuff to do.

Have you been to Missouri? Kansas >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Missouri. There aren't enough ">>>" in the world to make that comparison. Vadtoy grew up on the MO side of KC, and has family all over the state of Missouri. It's a bottom 5 state in America, easily.

your opinion on the matter contains no bias

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to DeacDiggler again.

If by "bias" you mean "has spent a ton of time in Missouri, unfortunately" then ... yeah, you're right.

Outside of small pockets (parts of KCMO, parts of St. Louis, some very remote parts of the Ozarks) - Missouri is the white trash capital of America. It's also the meth capital of the US, by a staggering amount. It is home of the saddest stretch of highway in America (I-40 between StL and KC, which is just a never ending parade of fireworks and porn shops). It can't repair it's roads, educate it's citizens or in general do anything right. It's a flat out a horrible, horrible state. It also happens to governed by lunatics.

As for KC - here's a quick blurb from GQ pointing out some neat stuff in the city (which should be added, the rich suburbs are in Kansas but the coolest parts of the city are in MO): http://www.gq.com/life/food/201306/short-order-kansas-city-guide-patrick-ryan-port-fonda-interview
