BB Staff: Woodberry, Ballard, & Bauman (DOBO) join from Tulsa; ChillIN

Convincing 16-17-18-19 year olds to come play BB at Wake is not exactly the same skill set as convincing 30+ yo alumni to open the checkbook and stroke one to WFU.

Let's hope Chill understands the differences, and can do a great job with the first task. Jimmies and Joes...

Is it good or not so good that Manning cannot bring in his own players for a while? On the positive side, he has a number of players with ACC game experience. On the negative side, these are not his recruits and are perhaps not the type of players he would recruit. So which is better: having experienced players or being able to recruit your own guys immediately?

It's a bit overblown. All the 2014 players worth anything would be committed by the time we got a new coach anyway. His ability to bring in his own guys is really delayed one year from 2015 to 2016. Normally, it would be super concerning that we could have a [Redacted] level disaster with so many new players in 2016... but there is a tremendous amount of in-state talent to be had, and now is the time we should already be recruiting them hard. I'm sure the whole staff is aware of the stakes.

Option C - having talented players.

There is a small window in which a coach can recruit based on the promise of what can do instead of what he's already done. We call that a honeymoon period. Clawson has already gotten 13 honeymoon recruits, most of whom will be among the highest rated players to come into this program in the last decade.

Manning will have a honeymoon period, but not many scholarships to work with to recruit based on promise and to make a difference relatively soon. That's a problem.

The honeymoon period lasts until he plays an actual game this November. Most of the 2016 class will make their verbal commitments between the end of May and the fall, so he will get his honeymoon period with a boatload of scholarships to offer.

This is false. Most of the 2015 class will make their verbals during this time. Only 10 of ESPN's top 60 for 2015 are currently committed. Of those only two committed before October of their Junior year (Oct. 2013).

Semantics... Most of the heavy legwork for recruiting elite to good prospects is done by the end of summer.

And yet, we've seen some recruiting bumps from past coaching changes in the ACC. Besides, our scholarship problem is an issue for 2014 and 2015. Unless we lose a few, it will basically be two seasons before we have any idea whether this staff can recruit. Hopefully he ends up being a great coach and recruiter so we don't end up being stuck "giving him 4 years to recruit his own players" starting in 2016 and wasting 6 years on top of the last 4.

There are 3 uncommitted 2014 players in ESPN's top 100.... #2 overall, a Chicago kid and an LA kid. A new coach was never recruiting anyone from that class unless it was a Madison Jones type recruit.

I would bet we have at least one more schollie for 2015 (lots of possibilities here)and DM recruits 2 players for that class. We'll also see how well he recruits the 2016 class with commitments before his 2nd season is up.

Regardless of whether they give their commitments during Manning's honeymoon period or not, the 2016 class will tell us everything we need to know about how well this staff will recruit.

2015 will be a pretty good indicator. Very few scholarships available (1, maybe 2?) and the ability to focus on getting a high-impact player with 1 ship.

One recruit isn't going to tell you very much. Now if we have some transfers and can bring in a three man class that would give some decent indication of how they might do.

Agreed. I do think the 2015 class will tell us something though. If they can't get a top 100 recruit to fill the one spot we currently have I will be worried.

I disagree. If he goes and gets a top 50 player for 2015, then that tells us a lot about what he might be able to do with multiple scholarships in 2016.

An impact 2015 recruit would be the first (maybe second, if you count Mitchell) one we have gotten since Travis McKie. Which is unbelievable to think about.

Deman says Chill has a shot at the third position but that decision will take longer than the hiring of the two assts from Tulsa.

does deman get anything right ever?

anything????

one day later:

Well there it is.
@EvanDaniels: Randolph Childress will join Danny Manning's staff at Wake Forest as an assistant coach, according to a source.
