Boehner Stepping Down at End of October

I think the diagnosis about Boehner being in an impossible position is spot on.

At this juncture I think the GOP is beyond the point of no return - it's going to split. More of a "when" than "if" question at this point methinks.

Whatever people think about Obamacare, there is no conceivable way it will be repealed as long as Obama is in office. Everyone knows that, but Boehner still allowed 40+ pointless votes that were never voted upon by the Senate. Tea Party was upset there weren't 100+ Obamacare repeal votes. Don't understand why social conservatives haven't demanded votes on banning abortion via constitutional amendment. Also has zero chance of passing or being ratified.

No doubt the 2016 field is extremely weak on both sides, but a huge chunk of the GOP has shown they have zero interest in governing and their leadership in Congress has shown they have zero control over their own base.

The Tea Party was upset they didn't do more than simple votes to repeal Obamacare.

The Tea Party, metaphorically speaking, want a blood bath instead of government.

Boehner just won the election for whatever Dem wins the nomination.

It's funny that the people who essentially forced out their leader believe Obama is the divisive one.

And one of the crazies somehow winning the GOP nomination will certainly expedite the process by forcing out all of the moderate republicans.

If trump wins I will not vote Republican. Don't know what I will vote, but I won't vote for Trump.

Explain this....(Asking honestly). I have heard a lot of people say that Boehner leaving has massive implications, but I just don't see it. Show me how this is going to influence 2016.

Power struggle. Tea party making a stink about conservative bona fides of the next Speaker without the votes to elect one.

I just don't see how this would make a big impact nationally. I don't think there is a significant number of Republicans who care about who the next Speaker is. Tea Party in Congress will probably make a stink, but I don't see it having any impact whatsoever. Tea Party is always making a stink, that is what they do. If anything he may save the Republicans a prolonged battled against the sequester. If he truly did sacrifice his speakership to get the job done, then he could avoid this thing getting messy in a few weeks, which I think would help the Republicans nationally.

ok then

Bad press for Republican politicians makes it harder to claim Democrats are the problem with government. It could give Democrats in House elections more ammo than usual.

I do agree that most people don't know or care who the speaker is. Those of us who have the interest and time to follow it tend to forget that. That said, if the Dems think they can win votes, they'll put it in ads to make sure people know.

If the Tea Party wingnuts force the new Speaker to shut the government down right before Christmas (December 11 is going to be the drop dead date) ... then yeah, that's going to have massive implications for 2016.

The dems aren't doing too well either. The lavishly funded favorite is self destructing, while the next two candidates are nice guys. One's a socialist and the other suffers from chronic foot in mouth disease. A lot of people are gonna be moaning all the way to election day, and after that they are likely to be moaning even more. The next president is likely to be - for one reason or another - a caretaker.

McConnell is a weasel, but he hasn't allowed the nonsense votes that Boehner did. If the next Speaker stiffles the Tea Party, that bodes well for a 2016 GOP nominee. If the next Speaker allows the clowns to run wild, GOP is hosed for POTUS and the Senate. Tea Party holds 40 seats in the House. GOP margin is 20 seats and they can't and don't want bloody primary battles in gerrymandered conservative districts. GOP has to show they can ignore the loud voices of minority ideologues and govern.

The next Speaker isn't going to stifle the Tea Party. They forced Boehner out because they felt they were being too stifled...you think they're going to allow for another Speaker who stifles them even more?

This. Just the threat of shutting down the government will fuel public frustration with government in general. If Obama was trying to get reelected the stink could be spread to the government in general, but instead the Republicans are going to shoulder the load and it will only delight hardcore conservatives and tea party folks who would never vote Dem anyway.

It's probably best for Bernie, but it will also take the focus away from Hillary's past and put it (loudly) on the present. The narrative on the liberal side will be that the GOP is in disarray - and much of the GOP is actually supporting the same idea, cheering for Boehner's exit and targeting women's health.

Maybe they can put someone up who will keep things sane enough to avoid all that, but not sure who that would be.

Thus the Biden discussion.

Tea Party isn't rational, they can't get rid of Obamacare before 2017, but that never stopped demands for votes. They also can't elect a new Speaker with 40 votes. Tea Party doesn't give a shit about the GOP, but they also don't have the votes to do whatever they want either. Boehner was too weak to shut them down, but a 2016 House like the 2013-2014 House isn't good for the national GOP in 2016. Tea Party and GOP will eventually have to split since Trump/Carson/Cruz don't belong in the same party with Jeb/Christie/Graham.

The rest of the GOP also can't elect a new speaker without the Tea Party's 40 votes...
