California Wildfire Disaster

Not that I like giving the man credit, but trump is probably talking about understory management. Most healthy forests have a sparse understory maintained by browsing ungulate populations (deer), canopy closure, and/or occasional wildfires that reduce fuel loads (ie, shrubs and saplings). Without these mechanisms debris and fire fuels build up in forests which means when fires do happen, they burn hotter and are much more destructive. In the lower 48 the most common natural mechanism for maintaining sparse understory is wild fire but we’ve spent about 100 years strongly suppressing fires (Thanks Smokey) and more recently started building exurban developments that put people in the middle of heavly fire prone forests. So, Forest managers have devised a number of ways to mimic fire disturbances in forested ecosystems that largely involve cleaning out the understory and thinning tree densities. Some political adviser that knows nothing about Forest ecology probably heard some where that environmentalists object to forest thinning management practices (which some enviro groups erroneously do) and told Trump to go after the Libs because they are fighting efforts to clean out Forest floors. Trump only half listening heard the phrase “cleaning the forest understory” and thought ‘how do you do that?...they must use rakes or some shit.’ And so that’s what he went with in the press conference.

Good to see other countries respect us again.

Dumb Canadian wants to build a wall to prevent GDP.

Heterosexuals, man.

“Before the fire was over, it had burned 47,000 acres and cost $8.2 million to extinguish, with nearly 800 firefighters battling the blaze.”

If Arizona would just rake their leaves, we could blow up all kinds of fun stuff.
