Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Pretty impress after a 2-7 start.

Better feeling about this team than last year's but obvs that can all change

Yep. Best record in the NL and best run differential in the majors. Been on a total tear lately. Let’s keep padding the win column while the iron is hot.

Bryant grand slam was great to see.

The Iowa connection is contributing. Dillon Maples, Tim Collins, Kyle Ryan and Allen Webster have combined for 27 IP, 25 H, 10 R, 9ER, 14 BB and 31K. That's a 3.00 ERA, a .236 AVG and a 1.44 WHIP. They have minimized the loss of production from Montgomery, Edwards and Rosario.

Taylor Davis announced his presence Saturday. The fact that the Cubs have won both games he has started with Darvish as SP doesn't hurt.

Guess bullpen was overdue to spring a leak. Still thought we might pull it off with the big hitters coming up in the 9th but not to be

Our bullpen didn’t spring a leak. Pedro was garbage and left bases loaded with no outs. Should have won by 1 in 8.5.... I was there. It was stupid cold but that’s no excuse.

Right, just meant someone was due for a stinker. But Pedro was a special kind of awful

Does Madden run Strop out again today in a late game save situation, should one arise?

and there Kimbrel sits unsigned and fresh....would he take a 1yr deal with a strong playoff and WS contender?

What it looks like is no one is going to sign Kimbrel or Keuchel until after the Draft, then if either are ok with it, they will likely get a massive amount for a 4 month deal. Not sure they won't just wait it out.

Zobs, Descalso to the IL - Addy being called up. Been a weird last 24 hours, there is also some rando that (maybe?) flashed a white supremacist hand gesture on TV at Wrigley yesterday.

Not sure where to go with any of this.

Actually, looks like Descalso stays with the team, just won't start. Addy starting at 2nd. Strop to the IL, Monty recalled.

Also, Zobrist IL is for personal reasons and his timetable is indefinite, haven't heard anything, but that doesn't sound good at all.

Strop to IL with left hamstring injury. Is that what put him on the shelf last season? Zobrist on the restricted list for personal reasons. With Descalso limited to pinch hitting that leaves Bote, Davis and Zagunis on the bench. Maddon and the front office get to be creative.

They should be fine for now, assuming Descalso is only a few days. With Russell up, removing all the shit that surrounds him, got a lot of flexibility. Also, Happ is starting to heat up in Iowa, may be a swap for Zags coming soon. Happ would give us someone that can play 2B and all 3 OF spots.

Happ or Zobrist for Zagunis? No problem if they carry 13 position players, but that hasn't happened in a long time. Bote appears to have become a permanent fixture and rightly so. He has been as clutch as anyone on the roster. Caratini or Davis as backup catcher. Injury will probably give Happ another opportunity but he appears to be odd man out for now. Dewess at .354/.459/.532 is making a statement at Iowa as well.

There was absolutely no reason for Joe Maddon to remove Kyle Hendricks from the game. None. Send him to the plate and watch three strikes go by. Return to dugout and prepare to pitch the ninth. Painting the corners with complete command for eight innings. Who in the bullpen can do better? Not a soul. Taking Kyle out did the Marlins a favor and they cashed in. This a reason Maddon's contract has not been extended.
