Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

I get that's a troll comment, but the Cubs are 9th in the league in getting hit and 24th in the league at hitting people.

Our 2, 3, 4 hitters have been hit 32 times - Riz, Bryant and Contreras.

Doesn’t Rizzo stand right on top of the plate though?

Indeed. Both Rizzo and Bryant are right on top of the plate.

They deserve to get hit. Luckily for them Bob Gibson isn't still pitching. If he was he would hit them then kick their ass if they complained.

Rizzo now has 13 HBP's on the season. That's tied for 2nd and a lot of HBPs in Rizzo's 356 plate appearances.

The player Rizzo is tied with in HBPs is D'Backs rookie OF Tim Locastro. Locastro has only 121 plate appearances and has been hit 13 times (currently the highest HBP rate in the modern era of baseball). He was also hit 7 times in AAA in 113 plate appearances. Locastro doesn't stand super close to the plate, but he makes no attempt to get out of the way when pitchers throw inside. FWIW, Locastro played D3 college baseball at Ithaca College. Here is article on how Locastro has perfected the art of getting hit by pitch: https://www.mlb.com/news/tim-locastro-hit-by-pitches-at-high-rate

Meanwhile, the Cubs lost another road series (7th consecutive?) and are now in second place. Scary to rely on Darvish to avoid a sweep.

the series in Pittsburgh is a 4-game series, so they haven't lost it yet

Randy Rosario recalled from Iowa. Alzolay and Wick optioned to Iowa. Rosario will give Maddon another LHP in the bullpen. Montgomery has joined Brach as a disappointment this year. He has surrendered runs in nine of twenty appearances and is an utter failure against left handed batters. 21 of the 44 have reached base resulting in a 7.04 ERA and a 2.74 WHIP.

Darvish is killing my fantasy teams. WTF, it's Pittsburgh?? Will he ever get it together?

Dillon Maples optioned to Iowa. Robel Garcia gets his first opportunity in MLB after four years as a low minor wash out in the Cleveland organization, five years in Italian league baseball and three months in the minors. Quite a journey. He has the numbers for a call up, does he have the game?

Hoyer and Epstein voicing their displeasure with team performance. Maddon's seat may be warming.

Descalso
Russell
Montgomery
Happ
Maddon

These are IMO the potential ex-Cubs in the next month. Any to add?

Tommy LaStella named to all star team but won't play due to injury. Cubs could have used his bat this season. .300/16/44 Who did the Cubs get for him from the Angels?

Future considerations.

A team composed of former Cub organization position players is impressive. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for pitching. That's why they are former.

Cubs end a four game losing streak, slugging past the Bucs 11-3. Robel Garcia starts at 2B so that Maddon can finally see him play. He didn't see much, getting tossed for his comments toward HP umpire Joe West and Pirate manager Clint Hurdle. He took offense at the consistent high and tight deliveries thrown at Cub hitters. Good theater in an effort to bring a spark to the club. It took Bote getting beaned before a warning was issued. Fired the Cubs up. Joe missed Garcia hitting a single, triple and home run as well as striking out twice. I imagine Garcia will get another opportunity to impress Joe Saturday against the White Sox.

As poor as their play has been, the Cubs are tied for first on July 4th.

ESPN crew pushing the idea of Whit Merrifield to the Cubs.

The Davie County kid who played at SC?

Great theater from Maddon yesterday storming out of the dugout to feign indignation at...a foul ball

That’s the one. Gotta figure Royals would want a ton for him and what do Cubs really have to give at this point?

Cubs minors is getting restocked. There is enough there to get him or whoever they want, just not sure they are going to do it. Tyson Miller had a rough AAA first start, but should be a top 100 guy next year. Hoerner and Amaya are both going to stay on the same pace. Brailyn Marquez and Alzolay both have a bunch of value right now. Roederer and Brennan Davis are both super young bats with huge upsides that have been putting up good numbers as teenagers in A ball.

Merrifield will be 31 next year, albeit on a great contract for 3 more years - not someone I would want the Cubs to target, but wouldn't be upset if they go after him. Nico is likely a year out, assuming he can continue his pace in AA after the injury - would be better if they can get someone on a short term deal and give up a little bit less.

Starting Roster of Cubs minor leaguers now on other teams:
Beef - C / Vogelbach - 1B / Lemahieu - 2B / Torres - SS / Donaldson - 3B / Jimenez - LF / Soler - CF / McKinney - RF / Candelario - DH
