Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Someone might be listening. Annoncements from Jed Hoyer.

Keegan Thompson was recalled from Iowa and replaces Micheal Rucker in the bullpen. Four straight good outings in the last two weeks pays off for Thompson.

Drew Smiley will return to the bullpen. Possible options to replace Smiley and start Sunday are Heyden Wesneski and Jordan Wicks from Iowa. Wicks was scratched from his start Wednesday night.

If Thompson could return to the form he showed the past two years it would be a huge bonus for the team.

Wicks is lighting up the Pirates. After he gave up a HR on his 2nd pitch, he has gone 5 IP 1H and 9ks on 80 pitches. Probably go 1 more and cruise to his 1st W.

I imagine Wicks will get another start. Gave up the homer, a single and a walk, then retired 15 straight Pirates. Getting early run support helped.

The cruise got a little bumpy during a five run 7th inning by the Pirates. Suzuki with a 2 run double in the top of the 9th for a four run cushion to end it.

Cubs with a much needed laugher over the Pirates. Assad and Thompson give the bullpen a needed day off. Bellinger leads a 10 run, 12 hit attack.

Javier Assad with another outstanding effort. Over the past two months he has pitched 48 innings and surrendered 28 hits and 9 earned runs. A nice job replacing Marcus Stroman in the starting rotation.

Keegan Thompson returns to the bigs with 2 clean innings and 5 K's to finish the game. As a reliever over 2+ seasons Keegan has compiled these numbers... 97 innings, 61 hits, 26 earned runs, 48 walks and 104 strike outs. That's a 2.41 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and .173 BAA. Smyley and Thompson could be the boost the bullpen needs down the stretch.

A first place Brewer team on an eight game winning streak will come to Chicago for three games starting tomorrow. Wrigley will be SRO. Baseball at its best.

Brew Crew really on a heater. Looking more and more likely the WC is our path.

Let's try to get one the next two days before the Reds series.

Great outing for Mississippi Fastball. Tough luck for the offense bottom 5. Game is on TBS. More bad hitting luck bottom 6.

Hell of a game. Both teams with outstanding pitching and defense. When a fielder's choice drives in the only run of the game, you're watching two teams doing everything right on the mound and in the field. Could be a repeat tomorrow afternoon. Good rivalry.

Through 4 innings it felt like the Cubs were losing but somehow managed to hold a 1-0 lead. Gutsy performance from Steele and the bullpen was lights out.

Another pitchers dual into bottom 7. 2-1 good guys. Hendricks no ER in 6 IP. Unfortunately he made a throwing error leading to the only Brewers run. Hopefully the pen can hold the lead again.
