Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Hendricks to IL (back) and Smiley to IL (hip). Garret Cooper DFA. Matt Mervis, Luke Little and Hayden Wesneski recalled from Iowa. I like the commitment to youth. Hope it works.

Injuries are starting to mount. Two of the best hitters and three projected starters are on the IL. Their replacements are all from the minor league system and have shown flashes they are ready. Canario, Busch, Mervis and PCA should get the PT to make statements. Wesneski, Brown and Thompson occupy roles they hoped for in spring training. All can secure their place in Chicago if they deliver.

Pitching staff win. The Assman deserved another W. Some poor at bats with runners on third and less than two outs. Busch in particular has really fallen off. Need Suzuki back. Conversely, Nico es en fuego.

Our starting pitching has been lights fucking out so far this year.

Neris still makes me nervy but he gets the job done. Let's keep it rolling boys!

Neris is a one pack closer. He has to use precision and guile because he doesn't get much swing and miss.

Assad shows like an ace. He has a plan, he executes it and he doesn't rattle. Last step is for Counsell to trust him the third time thru the order.

Watching Verlander was a treat. First ballot HOF. Assad matched him.

The little jump by PCA before his HR trot was pure surprise.

Wow what an end! Taillon superb and the Cubs squeak out 3 runs after getting no hit through 7. Morel the big 2 out 2 run HR off Mets closer. Leiter and Neris scoreless innings. Good win with an injury depleted roster.

Who thought that at the end of April that the five starters would be Imanaga, Taillon, Assad, Wesneski and Brown? Did anyone envision that Suzuki and Bellinger would both be on the IL this early? PCA with more plate appearances than Patrick Wisdom?

A very good April, all things considered.

I was surprised that Counsell removed Assad after five innings and 78 pitches. If it was a problem with a fingernail I understand. If he's Dr Hook he'll have an exhausted bullpen by September.

At some point Alzolay's tendency to throw home run pitches that result in losses needs to be addressed. Five home runs have resulted in four Cub losses. It seems time to use him when the Cubs are trailing an opponent. Get some work and get his edge back where he can't surrender a lead. When the error occured to extend the inning I expected Adbert to fold. He was pitching waiting for the hammer to drop rather than pitching to pick up his teammates. Not good.

The kids produce a run. Imanaga with a gem. Full pack requires a full pack but Happ, Madrigal and Amaya combine for an exciting DP to secure the W.

The bats are barely breathing. The bullpen is on life support. The starters are standing tall.

We're fighting through it so far - not sure it's sustainable as is, but gotta get our guys back and healthy.

Great resolve, and I think Counsell is a big part of that.
