Coastal Carolina; 7PM- ESPN3

Overall, a sloppy game versus a not that good opponent. Definitely have some things to improve upon.

Hopefully Hudson sees how effective his midrange jump shot is and continues to look for it. He's a streaky shooter from outside but his midrange shot looked great tonight.

Crawford was very hot shooting tonight. Took what the defense gave him and made them pay. Still is a little careless with the ball sometimes but he is capable of making plays that no other player can make. Not exactly sure why Crawford was taken out of the game while he was hot and also why he was not then immediately put back in when the team started letting Coastal back into the game.

Totally respect TVH's effort and contributions but WF needs to avoid playing him. It's basically 4 on 5 during offensive possessions.

Collins did a much better job controlling his fouling tonight. Fouls will likely continue to be his achilles heel the entire season but hopefully he learned how to avoid the dumb ones. Might be the most versatile big man on the team with his ability to play down low and extend out for shorter midrange shots. He should really be playing as much as his fouls allow him to play and probably should play most of the time when Devin is not on the court so that there is a down low threat.

Devin had a poor game. WF managed to still win a game that they probably would have lost a few seasons ago without a strong Devin contribution.

Dinos has to contribute a lot on offense to warrant playing as he is the worst defensive player by a decent margin. His hedging on ball screens is so slow and then he loses his man when rotating back, which causes havoc and open shots.

His minutes were limited but Moore looked decent, especially on the put-back slam. Still has a while to go before possibly becoming a regular in the rotation but you can see him making strides.

I would comment on Wilbekin but I didn't really notice him besides some missed shots. An off game, he'll regroup and come back strong.

McClinton did a nice job playing within himself. Being a "junk man" could suit him really well. More games like tonight would be optimal for him.

Rondale played like 3 minutes, so it's tough to judge him. The announcers talked about him needing to play well to warrant more PT and he proceeded to turn the ball over right after the comment. So his one error was compounded by the announcer's statement.

CMM was okay tonight. Much more assertive tonight versus a few days ago. Still adjusting but had some key plays. It was drastically down from last year but CMM went into "hero mode" a few times during the game. Hero mode = doing things outside of his role & the flow of the offense. For every good play he makes when he's in that mood, he equals or exceeds it with a bad play. He's very talented and does not need to force his play as he's naturally one of the best players on the court.

Not sure how this team beat UCLA and Indiana....Devin looked terribly bored tonight, 0-5 with his free throws. Need to be more focused when we play the X.

We excel at playing down to the level of the opponent. It's almost like a buzzer goes off when we get a decent lead on a lesser opponent to remind our guys to take it down a notch.

That's about his average # of minutes (he was averaging 14.8 mpg going into tonight's contest).

I understand but the thinking has been that foul trouble was a big reason his minutes had been limited. Tonight not only was he not in foul trouble, but Devin was in foul trouble - so I would have assumed that JC's minutes would have gone way up. PH mentioned that DM went with a small lineup - I am not sure how smart that is when you are playing a smaller team - why not impose our will on them?

DT shooting a cool 41% from the FT line the last 2 games. That's gonna kill us in ACC play in close games...

Collins, 14 min, 12 pts., 5 boards. Stud.

Been doing it all year. Manning can recruit but he seems like a bone head coach. We are damn lucky that we haven't lost a few of these games against much lower ranked teams. We are playing to the level of our competition and Manning continues to play VH, take out hot shooters, play crazy lineups and keep JC on the bench 25 minutes per game.

Our lineup at around the 8 minute mark of: Dinos, TVH, Wilbekin, Codi, and McClinton was one of the worst things I have ever seen.

It's obvious that Danny doesn't give a damn about anything except winning and making the team better for the future, but it's really frustrating in games like tonight where we should win by 15-20.

Big game on Tuesday night vs Xavier. Probably one of our biggest in 5+ years (maybe Syracuse two years ago rivals it).

Except you know what? In the end, it doesn't matter (for anything but kenporn) if we win by 15-20 or 6. A win is a win.

Weird to feel so frustrated when we are winning. IMO, we are winning on talent not execution. We have better over-all talent than we have had in a long time. But our defense continues to stink. We cannot keep people out of the lane. Time and again their PG would fake and blow right by his man into the lane either to score at the rim or to dish. Love Dinos offensively but he is a defensive liability. His reactions are way too slow.

McClinton had the best game I have seen him play. He is very athletic!

This is actually a really good post. We can't stay in front of anybody at all

One thing the team needs to learn is how to funnel players into the heart of the defense so that other players can help. Then the team also needs to learn how to properly provide help defense without it being useless or fouling. Plus that defensive rotations in help situations involve more than simply the primary defender and the one other player coming to help - ex: the weakside wing defender will normally need to drop to help on the "help" defender's man, then the top of the key defender will need to shade over towards the weak wing (since the wing is an easier pass than back out to the top of the key), etc.

While the guys need to figure out how to stay in front of the ballhandlers, the help defense is normally very bad. Someone's got to stop the penetration before the player gets to the hoop.

I wonder if there is a stat available to the staff that shows Devin is way more effective with Dinos on the floor than with Collins. It seems logical.
Collins seems to do most of his damage in the limited minutes he's on the court when Devin is not. I can't confirm this, but it is my observation.
If these two are at all true, Manning's front court rotation may be justified.
TVH, I can't explain though. As long as McClinton is contributing, he and Hudson should be playing SF exclusively unless we are in a 3 guard lineup.

Deacs win 83-77. A good offensive effort. A decent defensive effort in the first half. Coastal shifted gears in the second half and it became a run and gun affair. The Deacon defense disappeared and both teams traded baskets. At the 7:20 mark the Deacs still led by twelve. Deacs went cold and started to turn the ball over. Still no D. At 1:23 mark it's a two point WF lead. D returned, lady luck smiles on us and the Deacs win by six. WFU allowed Coastal to score 50 points on 65% shooting in the second half. The problem is obvious.

A few thoughts. Crawford and CMM played together a lot tonight. Crawford is a better shooter when CMM is on the floor. He can rely on Codi to run the team and concentrate on scoring. Codi seems OK with shared leadership. Crawford is the best guard he has played with at Wake and he increases the possibility of post season play. I think CMM and DT are focused on winning and getting to the Dance. Whatever it takes. McClinton is playing well, doing the little stuff. He has played like he has no intention of extended pine time. Collins is a beast. He needed to be on the floor after DT fouled out. Dinos isn't good enough to be the only big on the floor. Lacks D and rebounding strength. His offense keeps him on the floor late. MW and DT had off nights. It happens. Hudson... who knows? Looks great one moment and terrible the next. Moore is averaging a point and a rebound every 3 minutes. Unless he starts screwing up, I think Danny will play him every game. He is improving.

Some good insights here. Codi and Crawford played a lot together tonight, and Crawford shot much better with Codi on the floor. McClinton made all the easy baskets: that's what we'll need from him

TVH played six minutes tonight. The comments in this thread make it sound like he played 20.
