Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

"As schools start classes across the United States, public health experts warn that the politics around masks could hinder the nation's fight against Covid-19. But the real-life evidence about masks leaves little doubt that they work. In some places where schools have been open for a while now, such as Georgia and Hawaii, public health experts notice what happens when schools follow the science: classes go without disruption as long as staff and students wear masks. But when staff and students do not wear masks, Covid-19 can spread, forcing people to stay home to quarantine and classes returning to virtual learning.

"Dr. Francis Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health, implored parents on Sunday to see masks for what they really are. "This is not a political statement or invasion of your liberties. This is a life-saving medical device, and asking kids to wear a mask is uncomfortable, but kids are pretty resilient," Collins told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on This Week. "If we don't have masks in schools, this virus will spread more widely. It will probably result in outbreaks in schools and kids will have to go back to remote learning, which is the one thing we really want to prevent," Collins said.

"Several studies have shown that masks are effective at reducing the spread of Covid-19. In June, a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that other mitigation measures -- such as physical distancing and handwashing -- are "insufficient by themselves" in curbing the pandemic without mask use, too. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said last week during a town hall event in Boston that officials are following every jurisdiction and tracking outbreaks that occur in camps and schools. "The places that are having a problem, the places that are having disease that is transmitted in the schools, are the places that are not taking prevention strategies -- the places that aren't masking," Walensky said. "The places where you see kids in the hospital, the places where you see footage of kids in the hospital, are all places that are not taking mitigation strategies to keep our children safe."

Angus probably doesn’t cover his mouth when he sneezes either. Put him on ignore and don’t bother with him.

That chart is worthless. It’s an apples to oranges comparison. Every year except for last year kids were in school without masks. Last year most kids were not in school and those that were wore masks. If kids had been in school and unmasked last year, the numbers would have been dramatically higher. People should be ashamed to push such disingenuous data on social media.

We already know that Covid spreads like wildfire in unmasked schools based on the first week of school this year and tens of thousands of kids out already.

If this were true, why would Volcano Bay still be open in Orlando. Down with tyranny!!

Angus really brings the stupid. Another dumbass doing his research.
I can’t believe we’ve come back to trying to compare Covid to the flu.

Wait a minute, now hear me out, maybe kids should wear masks in school to prevent spreading the flu too!

I can’t believe we’ve come back to trying to compare Covid to the flu.

It’s unbelievable. We’ve been doing this for 1.5 years. There is no comparison. We’ve lost over half a million people in the US alone. We distanced and wore masks last year and the flu went away, but even with those measures COVID still spread because it is so much more infectious and dangerous.

School closures reported in five FL counties; districts ‘drowning’ in COVID
Health departments unable to help with testing, contact tracing

https://floridaphoenix.com/2021/08/...five-fl-counties-districts-drowning-in-covid/

“One school each in Charlotte and Hernando counties closed and one in Bay County delayed opening this week; the entire fifth grade at a Glades County school shut down; and 21 classrooms in Lee County were shuttered, according to the Florida Education Association.

The FEA also reports that 17 school employees, including seven teachers and an assistant principal, have died of COVID since Aug. 1.”

“At the FEA, president Andrew Spar said Gov. DeSantis should release $2.3 billion in federal emergency funds intended for Florida schools, rather than tie their hands by banning COVID restrictions, such as mask mandates, they might otherwise employ. He said the money could pay for more testing, upgrades to air-conditioning filtration systems, and additional staff to reduce class sizes and ridership on school buses.

“The governor here is holding billions of federal dollars meant to help these districts,” Sparr said. “Thousands are being quarantined, and we’re only two weeks into the school year.””

Is this the same Hawaii where schools are following the science??

yes, let's use the state with the lowest number of cases and number of deaths per capita as an example of unsuccessful mitigation. As it turns out, a huge percentage increase of a tiny number is still a small number.

The problem is, they're all as dumb as Anus yet they talk to each other as if they are smart and know what they're talking about. So Anus is on social media talking to dumb people who are being told by other dumb people that they're experts, and now we have tons of Anuses out there not understanding how charts work and OD'ing on horse medicine.

I have said many times that if there is one takeaway from this pandemic, it's how society's educational values have failed its citizens. We are one dumb country.

Agree 100%.

Have you actually read that article? The author basically just says that we don't know the exact magnitude of the effectiveness of masks in schools because we don't have a clinical study which only changes one virus mitigation variable at a time. That's it. And he is correct. But that doesn't mean that they are ineffective. You post like a dolt.
