COVID Thread 2: Operation Ludicrous Speed ! (Super Political!!!)

I'm personally willing to pay a hundred bucks to be sure I'm not going to get very sick /die from covid

I assume most insurance plans will cover the full price so the end consumer will not really notice the cost difference.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised that there weren't price controls included for any company that took taxpayer money in Operation Warp Speed to develop a vaccine.

Don't worry. The end user may not see any difference. Other than a new copay. For people with jobs that provide insurance. Oh, and the overall cost of healthcare hiding increases like this with...limited... visibility and explanation. More behind the scenes people processing claims and otherwise touching this process. Mistakes with double billing. Maybe. People with no insurance will continue to go without care which increases total cost for everyone else eventually.

This is another fleecing of Americans by the health insurance industry in our great country that leaves so many people behind. Our instance on some out dated version of capitalism that only enables the very wealthiest of us to thrive is just getting worse.

May have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today.

Step 1 basic research conducted using tax payer money is conducted over many years

Step 2 use tax payer funded research to start company

Step 3 develop breakthrough while being supported by the government

Step 4 government buys product from you

Step 5 continuously raise price of product

Step 6 profit immensely!

Step 7 complain about government regulations

In all seriousness - if we did what Obama wanted then the government would probably keep purchasing the vaccines and providing them at no cost to the American people.

This is what capitalism does to a society when healthcare should 100% not be produced by private corporations. Especially not when the R&D was funded and tested through tax payer money.

A fleecing by the health insurance industry? or by Moderna and Pfizer?

Yes, Obama ruined an otherwise perfect health insurance industry. Gleefully wishing the McCarthy congress can send us back to golden American healthcare era of 2007.
He had the political capital, momentum, and power to create actual helpful reform to a broken system. Instead, he came up with a dogshit program that anyone with any common sense knew was going to inexplicably manage to make a bad industry even worse. He blew it. Utter incompetence.

Definitely incompetent to go middle of the road and try to implement a republican plan, hatched in Massachusetts, on a national level. Dogshit indeed.

He wasn't an authoritarian. He could have 100% fixed it if he had abandoned his good faith efforts to give anything to Republicans. The failures of the plan lay there, not in what he SHOULD have done, which is completely disregarded the GOP completely and done what was right.

Glad we agree there.

I mean, yeah, that is pretty incompetent and ended up with the dogshit plan, no matter how it came about. That was his choice. Manning doesn't get a pass because he took on some of [Redacted]'s staff, they are both awful coaches. Choosing to incorporate a bad plan is a bad choice and probably worse than coming up with the original bad plan.

it's good to know there exists a parallel universe where Obama nationalized healthcare to 2&2's great support

maybe we really can't trust pharma

“I was angry to find out that there was data that was relevant to our decision that we didn’t get to see,” said Dr. Paul Offit, a member of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, a group of external advisers that helps the FDA make vaccine decisions. “Decisions that are made for the public have to be made based on all available information – not just some information, but all information.”

Awesome. Another example of a big company doing right by Americans of their own volition.

We really should revisit this trickle down economics thing. We're really on the cusp of something BIG
