COVID Thread 2: Operation Ludicrous Speed ! (Super Political!!!)

I participated in a Operations Research conference this month (I was there to present on recovery planning for an endangered bird) and half the program was about the logistics and planning for vaccine distribution. There we a lot of people, much smarter than Trump, thinking about and planning for this vaccine release.

Obviously. It's pretty much true in any large organization that the chief executive isn't the most technically competent from a detailed perspective. Of course Trump takes this to the extreme.

Honestly, I don’t care that Trump doesn’t care. That doesn’t really matter. What matters is the tens of millions of his followers don’t care and aren’t doing what it will take to make it through this.

You should care that Biden isn’t getting access to resources to make the transition seamless.

You should care that there’s a potential government shutdown on Dec 11th that could interfere with vaccine planning.

COVID Thread 2: Why Aren't More Democrats Getting Infected?! (Super Political!!!)

But that’s not because Trump doesn’t care about COVID. If his party and followers cared, they’d facilitate the transition.

Trump committing crimes against humanity matters.

^This. Trump will be out of office soon, and while he isn't going away and may well make another run in '24, the real issue is that he got 73 million people to vote to continue his incompetent clown shitshow for another four years, or 10 million more than he received four years ago. It doesn't really matter how it is explained or how it is justified, to somehow think that this man is in any way even remotely qualified to be president at all, much less to be reelected, is mind-boggling, and is a terrible sign for the future. Attack Democrats all you want, say that you won't vote for them because of (whatever whatever), but to honestly think that Trump is a better alternative is simply indefensible on logical or rational grounds no matter what defense or reason is used. And yet here we are.

I mean, even Neo-Nazi Richard Spencer apparently looked at the last 4 years and said, “nah, I’m gonna vote for the black lady to be VP rather than have the white race suffer another 4 years of abject incompetency.” What the fuck is wrong with those 72 million Americans?

I'm sure the usual suspects would say that it is all somehow the Democrats fault. The problem with that argument is that requires one to actually believe that a longtime centrist Democrat like Biden, from working-class origins in Scranton, is somehow a socialist or under the control of AOC and the "Squad" or could possibly be more incompetent, corrupt, chaotic, bigoted, and divisive than Trump has provably been for the past four years. And to believe that is to deny every shred of evidence since 2016, and ultimately reality itself. And yet the will to believe otherwise is so strong that tens of millions of voters do indeed believe it, and judging from numerous articles they see Trump as their hero, savior, and last bastion of defense against the hordes of evil LibDems trying to destroy them and their America. It would be sad if it wasn't affecting all the rest of us as well.

Talked to my wife's colleague and our neighbor who is an infectious disease specialist. He's optimistic about the vaccines and believes that we can use our flu vaccine system to distribute them. But he's not optimistic about how we make it to the vaccine. He put it like this: "It’s like Custer. If you hear the Calvary is coming, you hope there aren’t a bunch of dead bodies waiting for them."

This is absolutely right. We are probably 1-2 months away from turning this in the right direction, but the next 1-2 months are going to be brutal because many are not social distancing. We are going to run out of nurses, physicians, therapists, etc., when all we need to do is avoid others. There is a reason the term is “avoid them like the plague.”

I hope we can get to the point where historians can look back at this moment. Cases spiked right after the election and continued to rise while Trump fought to stay president but didn’t fight COVID.

For those who would like lockdowns but want to defund/abolish/acab the police. How should lockdowns be enforced without law enforcement?
