"Conservative activist Don Yelton has stepped down from his position as Republican precinct chairman of Buncombe County, N.C., following controversial comments that aired Wednesday on the Daily Show.

The remarks were made during an interview with Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi, during which Mandvi and Yelton discussed efforts to pass new voter identification requirements in North Carolina, a requirement that many critics argue will subdue voter turnout in the state.

“The law is going to kick the Democrats in the butt,” Yelton said. “If it hurts a bunch of college kids [that are] too lazy to get up off their bohonkas and go get a photo ID, so be it. If it hurts a bunch of whites, so be it.”
Yelton also made a series of racially incendiary remarks to Mandvi as they discussed the law.

“If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it,” Yelton added.
Following his controversial interview, the Buncombe county GOP Chairman Henry Mitchell vehemently distanced the party from Yelton’s comments.

“Let me make it very clear, Mr. Yelton’s comments do not reflect the belief or feelings of Buncombe Republicans, nor do they mirror any core principle that our party is founded upon,” Mitchell said in a statement released to the press.

“This mentality will not be supported or propagated within our party,” Mitchell added.
Still, Yelton stood by his comments on Thursday.

“The comments that were made, that I said, I stand behind them. I believe them,” he told Mountain Xpress, a local alternative paper.

During the Daily Show interview, Yelton rejected claims that he is racist.

“I’ve been called a bigot before,” Yelton said. “[And] as a matter of fact, one of my best friends is black.”

He was forced to resign....for telling the truth about NC's voter suppression laws.

I'm surprised any politician would go on the Daily Show other than to sell books.

Suuuuuuuuuurre.

Voter ID is where I definitely split with my fellow left-wingers. Anti-ID Democrats have made getting a free ID seem as impossible as engineering a spacecraft which could land on the sun.

Agreed 94...having an ID to vote just seems like common sense. You need an ID to do basically everything in society. I had an interview this morning and couldn't get into the building without an ID.

My problem is not with the principle, but the implementation. Do it right on a long timetable to resolve potential suppression issues that are valid.

I don't have a problem with showing a photo ID in order to vote. I do have a problem with the restricted nature of accepted IDs, the amount of paperwork required to acquire the ID, and all the non-ID related policies they stuffed into the ID law.

If you don't think the same people who are trying to suppress the vote won't make getting "free" ids incredibly difficult, you are being very naive.

Sure I agree with that...it should be straightfoward to get an ID.

I'm on board with this. Government Ids should be easier and free (not if you keep losing them obviously - but free once every 5 years or something). I am definitely for voter ID but I would marry it to overhauling our is system. No reason that it should cost $20 to put a digital photo on a piece of plastic. Also no reason someone can't prove their id to vote. If pubs aren't willing to combine the two then they aren't sincere in my opinion.

Long time table is smart as well. We have seen the results of rushing legislation before the country is ready.

I agree, and make it stupidly easy to get one. Have multiple times during the long timetable when people can go somewhere close (maybe where they vote) and have people staffed there to answer questions, help them along in the process, advise on what documentation is needed, and help find solutions if there are any problems with their documentation. And do everything possible to get the word out about the requirements and the way to get IDs.

Oh, and as to the original post, Aasif Mandvi saying "you know we can hear you, right?" made me laugh a lot.

It's clearly not the first time that guy said those things and not the first time his Republican buddies heard them.

Not sure why people still go on the Daily Show.

I was watching that thinking this guy has to know that this will be televised, and then I realized he actually thinks what he is saying is OK.
