Democratic Candidates for POTUS, 2016 edition

That post makes no sense. Hillary has had a 20 year coronation and she still hasn't convinced us that she is a good candidate. Even if she wasn't under investigation by the FBI, and even if she hadn't lied about Benghazi, she would still be an inauthentic Warhawk corporate shill neocon.

It's absolutely baffling to me that black and latino dems support her so strongly, and I've tried harder than most to figure out why.

Yep sure am. Voted for Bernie in the primary and if he were on the ballot I'd vote for him, but Hillary's the best candidate that's got a shot so I'm gonna vote for her.

Bernie doesn't have the legitimacy with minorities. He had to make up massive ground and he didn't do it.

Perhaps another candidate could have beaten Hillary like Obama did. Bernie just wasn't the guy.

I think that's my disconnect. My experience with black voters is that they perceive Hillary as the incumbent, as if she is Obama's third term. How could any challenger have swung them? Another black Democrat? A celebrity?

I can understand voting for Clinton if you're worried about Trump and live in a state that's at least reasonably close but MA? You should write in Bernie or go to a movie instead.

Black folks did well in the 90s under Clinton. We went from "Boys n the Hood" to "The Best Man".

And despite all that, Bernie is getting beat down. Imagine if he was going up against a good candidate?

Imagine if Bernie wasn't a 76yo self identifying Socialist Jew from Vermont with no name recognition or celebrity that only entered the race 10 months ago. Jesus Christ, without the loyalty of the southern black vote a strong wind could have knocked Hillary out of this race.

She isn't a neocon at all.

How is it baffling? Over thirty years. she was huge champion of minority kids through her work with the Children's Defense Fund. In the 90s, black and Latino earnings and employment increased greatly. She created the CHIP program to get millions of black and Latino kids healthcare coverage. CHIP was all her idea and she got it passed.

As a Senator she worked on expanding Pell Grants when the GOP tried to kill them.

She's done many other things in minority communities. Hell, Bill was called "the first black POTUS".

It could easily be argued that no one since LBJ has done as much for minorities before being the nominee for either party than Hillary has.

You should look at some history. Your statement makes no sense.

Hate to agree with RJ, but we had this argument a month or 2 ago. It's a blatantly ignorant assertion. I don't like Hillary, and she is a bit more of a hawk and friend to Israel than Obama, but to lump her in with Cheney, Wolfowitz and Kristol shows an ignorance of recent American history.

Seems like a feeble attempt by a Cold War historian to make his work relevant in 2016. You could argue that micro olds don't like Bernie because they don't remember the New Deal too.

indeed; one could argue that lack of historical geopolitics causes all sorts of perspective problems. the mangling of the middle east in the latter 19th and early-mid 20th century, for example.

I thought the article does a pretty good job explaining why Bernie's message fails to gain as much traction with the older crowd, who lived through the cold war. Semantics aside on the meanings of "democratic socialism," Bernie isn't winning favor with the 40 and over crowd that grew up fearing the big bad USSR. There's a lot of ignorant people out there who hear about socialism and associate it with the failed USSR, and that's pretty much their only context to draw from.
