FTs weren't the only reason we lost that game

We gave up 28 freaking points in the last 5 minutes. Just let that sink in. That puts them on pace for 224 points over 40 minutes. That defense down the stretch was just atrocious. Once again our complete inability to stop dribble penetration is just a killer for this team. UVa probably couldn't have scored any more points in that stretch if they were going against NO defense. If you let the other team score easy buckets after only wasting about 5 seconds of clock, you better make every one of your damn FTs to have any chance to win. The fact that our defense has probably actually gotten worse as the season goes on makes me think it is a coaching issue. The fundamentals and smarts just don't seem to be there.

9 of those 28 were in the last 14 seconds.

19 points in 4:45 ain't nothing to brag about either.

Ah .... it was just bad luck .... this team is young .... can't catch a break .... the beat goes on

Our defense from say the 4 minute mark or so in was like you expect a team to play in the last 30 seconds when they are up by 15. It was as if we were more concerned with not fouling then we were with getting stops or even making them run some clock before scoring. To me, that is where coaching comes into play. At a minimum, do something to make them run some clock, be it some full court pressure, trapping at midcourt. Instead, we let them get easy lay-ups or kick-outs for open threes with 25 seconds left on the shot clock time and time again.

Bryant Crawford with the steal with 23 secs to go...up 7. If he just takes the foul there instead of throwing it to nobody at half court, we probably win. Not because Crawford would've hit those FTs, let's not kid ourselves, but more so because UVA would've had to dribble down one more time after rebounding our misses from the line.

Don't forget the TO where Hudson stepped out of bounds. That ran zero seconds off of the clock, and I beleive they scored almost immediately upon inbounding the ball. Same thing - if we could have just gotten the ball in bounds and made them foul it probably would have run another 10-15 seconds off of the clock, even with missed FTs. And then there was the possession where they missed 2 FTs, and we fouled on the rebound, and they then made those 2 FTs. Just so many fuck-ups all around. An almost impossible game to lose, yet we pulled a classic WF and managed the impossible.

This is a good recap of several different things that happened.

That said, can you even imagine Wake Forest even coming close to pulling off this win tonight if the roles were reversed (UVA winning and Wake trying to come back from behind)???

We used the el matador D like we were up 30 against State too and it almost bit us.

Man, if only in the last minute we'd been able to force 2 turnovers and board a missed 3 to control the game in 3 consecutive possessions. Oh wait, we did. And still lost.

So you are saying that giving up 28 points in the final 5 minutes is actually pretty good defense?

WTF happened? I heard we had a 14 point lead! Was working and could not attend or watch. Was this Hindenburg-esque?

:(

You can't possible be defending our defense down the stretch. It was atrocious.

Eh, they had 14 points in 4 minutes. Earlier in the game we had 14 points in 4 minutes as well and we weren't rushing shots down by a bunch. Credit to them for hitting them, but the real outlier is 9 points in 17 seconds on 3 consecutive 3 pointers by 3 different players including a banked in game-winner which was that player's only shot attempt all game.

And of course that's bad defense, but we also got the turnovers and misses we needed to win the game. That's how end-of-game scenarios work. You give a dunk to avoid fouling, you allow an NBA-range 3 because it's low percentage and fouling is the #1 way you could still lose.

The bottom line is 20 seconds left. With the ball. Up 7. It's as close to a sure thing as there is in sports, but shit happens.

The worst part about the defense in the last 4-5 minues, wasn't even that they were scoring on almost every possession; it was that we were allowing them to score so quickly. We played last 30 second type of defense starting with about 5 minutes to go. That was like a football team going to a prevent defense with 12 minutes to go in the game.

I would like to see a Manning Prosser all star Sunday...Rotations dictated by wheel of fortune spins and defense assignments by a coin flip

Our older players don't know how to win. They've rarely done it. We don't have experienced guards who can put the game away at the foul line (CMM has to be taken out). Crab missed the front end of a one and one and stepped out of bounds. Greek missed two free throws. Crawford made a bonehead pass after a steal, and missed three free throws in the final minute. Devin receives an inbounds pass ( why???) and keeps the ball ( why??). Crawford should have missed the last FT , because there is no way UVA gets much more than a half court heave if he does. But we have him make it, pull the players back from the line and leave nobody ( such as Doral) go distract the inbounds passer. Neither Doral or Collins was in to defend shots from the wing. We lose to a wild bank in from the corner when Devin closed out late. A comedy of mistakes.

Lots of good points on this thread. I've heard many times the saying "Good teams find a way to win". Well, I think it's also true that bad teams find a way to lose. We're 1-7 in the ACC, and as Bill Parcells always said, "You are what your record says you are". We're losers.
