Has the quality of media declined as technology has proliferated?

I doubt it will kill that model in that people will still be coming home and turning on their TV. Another factor is TV is often about lead-ins to shows. People like to hear about local news, local sports and local weather. This leads into national/international news.

Another factor is national news is not very expensive to produce.

Comparing the two IMO could only be done by comparing the Nightly News. In the period from the 50-70s you only had the national news to get your stories, maybe a little here and there on radio. CNN and others burst into the scene in the 80’s to give you 24 hour news, so now you are getting several updates a day, but still stories pieced together after collecting tie-bits and putting them into a story. FFW to 2014 where everyone expects instant news, and most commonly “tweets”, obviously it is watered down, but I think you would have a hard time saying the nightly news is a lesser product now than 30 years ago.
