Hinton

So disappointing but at least we know.

How will that affect his ability to play a fifth year elsewhere as a graduate transfer ? He won't be able to do that now, right ?

Why wouldn't he be able to do that? We've had transfers who missed a year due to injury.

He could graduate after four years and apply for a fifth year at a new school.

Very disappointing. Another in a long line of missed opportunities at the QB position.

Good luck with the recovery, Kendall.

So his four years would be:

2015 (last year)
2016 (redshirt)
2017 (rSo)
2018 (rJr)

Then transfer (fSr) to Austin Peay.

Was thinking about the Mauk situation, but I guess he was trying to invalidate his redshirt year or some shit.

Mauk was trying to get a sixth year. Hinton would be getting fifth.

If/when Hinton graduates, he could transfer wherever he is accepted. As stated by Clawson, the timing of the granting the medical redshirt waiver is quirky. It can't and won't be granted now. WF and/or Hinton must wait until after Hinton's 4 years of eligibility expires, and then apply to the NCAA for the medical redshirt waiver for a 5th year. So, Hinton transferring to play football after he graduates from WF would be contingent upon the NCAA granting the waiver after the 2018 season (which seems likely given the circumstances).

BTW, the QB competition next Spring is going to be interesting. Wolford will be a returning 3 year starter coming off a bowl game. Hinton should be healthy and will have beaten Wolford out until Hinton's injury. Kearns will be a sophomore in put-up or possibly move-on mode. Coming off a redshirt year, Jamie Newman will be in the mix, and WF will have Taylor Powell and Tayvon Bowers coming in (wonder if either will enroll this Spring). Lots of competition.

It sad for the kid. He must be disappointed not to play after investing so much in preparing for what we all thought would be a breakout season. Then on top of this he must rehab and wait for another season to arrive. Whatever it means for Wake football, it means a lot of grief for Hinton himself.

Hate it for Hinton, but we'll have more options and more depth next year.

Yep, that's my take as well. The QB position is well stocked for the future.

Am I way off base thinking that Hinton could be a pretty good slot WR? His chances of getting to the NFL at any position are extremely low, but I'd imagine they'd be a bit higher at WR.

He's no Braxton Miller or Julian Edelman, but I'm thinking along those lines. Hinton's not as fast as those guys, but is quick and dangerous in space.

No way for Hinton to get the fifth season at Wake as a grad student??

After Hinton's 4th year in 2018, he can apply to the NCAA for a 5th year medical waiver. If the NCAA grants it, he can play a 5th year at WF.

The grad transfer rule is a separate and distinct process. If Hinton graduates from WF in 4 years, he can stay at WF and play as a grad student (assuming the NCAA grants his medical waiver) or Hinton can transfer to another school and play as a grad student (again assuming that medical waiver is granted).
