Redskins expected to interview Jim Caldwell next week [updated]

Update, 3:50 p.m.

Caldwell, formerly the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, also is scheduled to interview for the Detroit Lions’ vacant coaching job. The exact timing of Caldwell’s interview with the Redskins has not been determined, according to Wooten.

“We know they’re going to bring in Jim Caldwell,” Wooten said. “I think it’s going to be next week.”

Caldwell has spent two seasons with the Ravens, first as quarterbacks coach and then as offensive coordinator, after 10 seasons with the Colts. He worked with Peyton Manning as the quarterbacks coach in Indianapolis and then succeeded Tony Dungy as the team’s head coach. The Colts had a regular season record of 26-22 under Caldwell. He went 14-2 and reached the Super Bowl in his first season but was fired after going 2-14 without Manning, who was hurt, in 2011.

Y'all are giving the 'Skins too much credit. Schefty mentioned him as the frontrunner for both this and the Lions job. Though maybe his colleague Polian is influencing him

Caldwell will not be the Redskins next coach, but he has had a very solid NFL coaching career. He was a QB coach on the Super Bowl champion Colts. Took the Colts to another Super Bowl as HC, and then won the Super Bowl as the Ravens OC (when they beat the Colts, Broncos, Patriots and 49ers back to back, and they lit it up on almost all of them). Clearly, Caldwell struggled at WF, but it bugs me when WF fans act like Caldwell is not a well-qualified coach. He is.

Look at the coaching records of the last 5 coaches at WF, and all of them had a lot of success either before or after WF. WF is a tough place to coach football (not saying it's impossible, but that history has shown that it's easier at other places).

I noticed you neglected to mention how he fared the one year he did not have one Peyton Manning.

And they weren't very good in his second year there, either

Must feel great to be interviewed for a job when the only reason you are there is the color of your skin.

Feels better than not being interviewed for a job because of the color of your skin.

I'd be fine with Caldwell in Detroit. Players respect the man and he's not an asshat like Schwartz.

Caldwell has learned a lot since he was at Wake. Wake may have been a step too far when he arrived. Position coach to head coach is kinda skipping a step - coordinator. Also, there was the transition from "selecting" players to having to convince players to even take a look.

Caldwell's skill set and experience may well be better suited for the pro game than college.

Caldwell (aka Gentleman Jim the First) could be a competent overall manager and good talent evaluator over the course of a season. He'd need really solid coordinators. But where you'd really worry is high-pressure situations like end of game scenarios, time out and clock strategies, or any other quick-decision situations.

Yes. He had some unacceptable examples of clock management whilst with the Colts

So in the dog eat dog world of professional coaching the reason there aren't more black HCs is because owners/GMs are racist?
