Judge Moore accused of sexually assaulting/pursuing underage girls in his 30s

I'm sure some did.

How many would be enough for you to say that you feel good about the way things are headed?

Jones won by 1% over an accused hebephile, and most of that was due to black voters voting overwhelmingly (95%) for him.

What was the white voter breakdown? I would guess very much in favor of Moore still.

MSNBC exit polls showed White vote at 74% Moore, somewhat monolithic also.

I don’t know much about Moore other than when the allegations became
Headlines. I trust you on his record as a judge and the other offenses that should have disqualified him.

I’m not minimizing child molestation or any of that. I’m simply saying that you need to put yourself back in a place and time where certain behavior was not taken serious enough to be considered “criminal”.

Can you imagine a 30 something guy hanging around a mall today bothering girls in Sephora? Your 14 year old daughter going on a date with someone that age? Hell Nooooooooo! That’s what people were thinking in terms of today not when and where these things occurred. Or maybe he is a sexual predator. There’s got to be some recent hokey pokey out there. Men like like just don’t quit. They get worse. Just saying.

I wish someone could help me out here. You needed something moore (ha kidding) than his obvious record in a conservative or right wing state to get a dem elected. Because he’s a bigot racist and all the things you believe, and it still wasn’t enough to get him out, did this need to be brought up to put the icing on the cake? Was it all true or exaggerated?

We will never know. Thank God for sexting and emails. Could have saved a ton of money.

You realize there were more allegations than just this guy creeping at the mall right? That folks have come forward saying he actually molested them?

For those who keep bringing it up, according to MSNBC exit polls the white vote was 74% for Moore, somewhat monolithic also.

Shocked that Moore lost, but even with all of massive negatives embedded in the Moore candidacy, the margin was razor thin.

Even so, Moore may have won had he campaigned at all (Moore spent the final weekend before the vote at the Army Navy game, and essentially avoided public appearances over the last month). Also, Kayla Moore's comment about the "jew lawyer" may have been the straw the broke the camel's back for those who planned to hold their nose and vote for Moore. For a segment of conservative Alabama people that vote Republican in every election without thinking twice, Moore just became too much of an embarrassment.

While this probably didn't matter to the vast majority of the electorate, perhaps 1% of those that cast their ballots yesterday felt that the bottom line was that Roy Moore was just too stupid to vote for.

Yeah, his wife's comment that "1 of our lawyers is a Jeeewww" was comic gold. I gotta admit that a significant part of me wanted to see Moore win just for the absurd comedy of it all. But then again Vonnegut and Heller are 2 of my favorite authors.

It's been said before, but I think it's worth repeating: not intended to minimize the allegations against Moore but even before these allegations he was an absolutely terrible candidate. I mean to be removed from the state supreme court not once, but twice in ALABAMA is absolutely insane. The fact that he believes homosexuality should be criminally punished and that teaching evolution leads to the downfall of society are just batshit crazy positions.

And despite all that (perhaps even because of it in his state) Moore still came within roughly two points of the Senate. I'm glad Jones won but damn that's sad.

Auburn University is actually a fairly conservative student body. I'd give a lot of credit to Auburn and Opelika residents. The residential yard sign ratio was very strongly skewed to Jones, they were drinking the Democrat water.

Without looking at voter breakdown for previous AL Senate elections, I‘d bet black voters always vote dem at a rate of around 95%. Jones didn‘t win because of the black vote. The black vote is a constant. He won because enough voters who otherwise vote pub voted against Roy Moore.

That's why the emphasis is on turnout. Black voter turnout was significantly higher than 2004, 2008, and 2016.

i like how the multiple posts mix in together so it's hard to tell that there isn't actually a conversation going on.

DNC waged stealth organizing campaign for Jones

Despite publicly remaining mum on the race, the Democratic National Committee spent nearly $1 million on the contest while dispatching and funding 30 aides here, a party official told POLITICO. That push came just as Jones sought to distance himself from the national party and win over conservatives.

This is what I've wanted to see from the Dem party in areas where their overt support could do more harm than good - stay quiet but send staffers to help organize.

Yes, but, black turn out was way higher than usual. The size black vote was a huge reason for Jones' victory, but not necessarily the percentage.

Fair point.

Which is why voter suppression is a huge factor in the Southern states which have the largest black populations. Instituting voter ID laws, playing whack-a-mole with DMVs and polling places, and curbing early voting are all key to keeping black voter turnout low.

I don't know if this got posted an hour or so ago so I'll repeat it.

It's been clear that Democrats didn't learn the lesson of the 2008 election. They took a lot for granted without critically evaluating how to nurture the coalition of black voters, young voters, and pissed off white women. They just accepted that Obama was super popular without understanding that Hillary wasn't and that the coalition could win races at all levels. I hope this is a lesson they will learn from VA and AL. Engage ALL voters and lay out a substantive argument for the Dem candidate. Don't just assume people will show up.

Something it seems a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of black people live in the South.

Alabama has the 6th highest percentage of black population among the 50 states. 26.4% of the population and 30% of the turnout is HUGE. Similar numbers in Mississippi (37.4% black), Louisiana (32.1%), Georgia (30.9%), and South Carolina (27.5%) would put those states in play as well.

Look out for new voter suppression efforts in Mississippi in advance of the senate midterm election.

Jones is only going to vote roughly 55 - 60% Democrat, but should be there for the big issues. He is going to be in a tough spot with 2nd amendment restrictions since he preached pretty hard that he is a firm defender of it in order to get Republican votes. I guess for a senate seat in Alabama though, even winning 50% of the big issues is considered a win, especially since he never compromised his stance on abortion.
