KLEMPSUM: Keys to Victory

Colburn and Carney getting the 1st string "or" status.

Wonder if Carney will even get any snaps this week.

Byrd fumble on first and 10 at the 10 and missing blocks doesn't help his or the team cause.

Wade and Hines didn't have their best game efforts.

Wendell Dunn and Duke Ejiofor graded out as the two highest rated edge rushers in the conference last week.

Wake’s defensive line is criminally underrated

Congratulations to both of them!

A few times I thought Dunn was going to take the handoff from the FSU QB, but he never quite got it. Seemed like he was in the FSU backfield anytime he wanted to be.

Clemson's weakness is their secondary. Our #1 weakness is still our OL. They will almost assuredly play press coverage to limit the short passes and bubble/tunnel screens and force longer developing routes to beat them, which obviously allows time for their DL to dominate. Was pretty shocked that FSU didn't press more, and maybe they had a healthy respect for our speed (for once).

To beat this, Wolford is going to have to take some shots downfield. Especially against a team like Clemson, if pretty much any of our receivers have a one on one match up in press coverage, I want Wolford throwing a 3-step go route like he did a couple times to Washington last game. One was a big catch, one was a blatant PI, and one Washington should have caught. And at least 2 were against McFadden for FSU who will be a 1st rounder. I'll take Washington or Lewis over a CB, Dortch or Hines over a dime/nickel back, or Cam over a LB/S in 1 on 1 match-ups all day long. Screw the slow developing zone reads and RPOs. Let's come out firing.

And this, kids, is why protective gear should always be worn when handling statistics.

Couldn't agree more and might want to dissect those stats just a wee bit as we have played zero top 25 whereas CU has played 3 top 25 and BC and we have a clearly weak FSU, BC and some patsies. And we couldn't do anything vs. ASU for a WHOLE HALF> Keep your head buried in the sand if you want, but this offense is rather woeful against good Ds and need to do something to inject some life into it. No more Blue Hose or Utah States to pad the stats.

FSU either didn't seem to respect Dortch or were flat out unable to cover him. We did a great job getting him the ball throughout the game. I wonder what Clemson's scheme will be in that regard.

FWIW, S&P offense and defense ranks of App State, FSU, Wake, and Clemson (for comparative sakes - recent opponents and Clemson - and then where Wake ranks)

App State: 59th offense; 31st defense
Florida State: 20th offense; 7th defense
Clemson: 27th offense; 4th defense
Wake Forest: 73rd offense; 15th defense

ETA: Wake plays a brutal defensive slate this year in general. Here are the defensive ranks of the 11 FBS games, in order: 33rd, 68th, 59th, 20th, 27th, 26th, 30th, 18th, 61st, 45th, 52nd.

We only play two teams in the bottom half of D-1 in defense and none are worse than 70th overall.

Or let me say another way. If our first 3-4 drives lead to a couple of first downs and no points and we are not already down 28 then we definitely need to try Hinton. He is most certainly quicker and has the much stronger arm from what I have seen. Wolford's throws beyond 15-20 yards seem to float whereas Hinton can throw on a line. See against Duke 2 years ago when Hinton hit the deep ball down the side with WR in stride. You just don't see Wolford able to throw that. He needs the WR wide open or for the WR to come back under coverage or outjump the DB. Just not Wolford's strength and as others have said we have to test their DBs deep to have any chance.

The Hinton-Wolford issue is over IMO. Wolford clearly won and there's no reason he should relinquish the starting spot.

Don't really know how people who have watched Wake play this year really believe that Hinton would be doing a better job than a guy who leads the team in rushing, has thrown 8 TDs to 1 interception (which wasn't on Wolford at all), has a 152.4 QB rating, a 63.2 completion percentage, and has led the team to a 4-1 record.

The line is 21.5 (it opened at 22). Total is 46.5. So, Vegas is essentially predicting a 34-13 final. WF has covered its last 3 against the Tigers, but has not won the game straight up in 8 years.

For those few who think WF wins the game straight up, a $100 on WF gets you $1075 if the Deacs win. You have to lay $1650 on Clemson to win $100.

BTW, anyone clinging to the hope that Hinton will play in any situation other than a blowout or an injury to Wolford is lost. Wolford will be WF starter the rest of the way unless he gets hurt or starts throwing multiple picks.

Again those are padded stats thanks in large part to PC and USU. 7 TDs vs. those 2 alone. Only 1 TD against others. Would love to know Wolfords QBR against just BC, FSU and ASU.

Here is a stat to make my point and if you want to keep living off patsies for your comfort then so be it, but 20 of the 24 pass completions vs. FSU were screens, bubble screens or sideline passes. So only 4 passes completed downfield. That is going to be a huge issue if we keep thinking we can live off the short passing game as great Ds are going to press big time and shut us down. As someone else said it was curious why FSU didn't press more but they probably thought their DL would create enough havoc and were willing to give those up knowing they would shut us down in red zone. Which they did by and large if not for a huge fumble they gave up near their redzone.

Hinton is not going to play unless and until Wolford gets hurt or starts turning it over. End of story.

Absolutely!

I was impressed with the hail mary throw at the end of the fsu game. It was a perfect ball, but just another example of the 100's of deep balls our 6' plus receivers don't come down with.

PC yes. USU no. USU is 3-2. Their other loss was Wisconsin. USU will probably go bowling. That was a quality non-con win.

What gives you any reason to think we will have enough time to throw deep against Clemson?
