KP Report - VT Hokies - Tuesday 9 pm - LJVM - ACCN

I only watched some of the first half last night. Turned the game off at halftime. I checked the score this morning and see we lost by 10. I’m thinking.......if Chaundee played and scored 11, would we have won?

We were down by 20 until Childress went on a 12 point scoring spree in the final 4.5 minutes while VT was just playing prevent D. The game wasn't as close as the score indicated.

I attended last night. Currie was sitting a few rows behind me. He kept pretty quiet but you could tell he was definitely locked in to the "game".

IN the first half we managed to keep it close because of Childress on the bench and Sarr actually taking some shots inside. He would be immediately double (or even triple) teamed and would do his best to kick it out. Some of those kickouts actually turned into made outside shots, particularly from White. He had 12 in the first half, and then he sat for much of the beginning 2nd half.

It was quite the juxtaposition of coaching. The VT coach was all in and talking to his players. Manning doesn't correct players as they come off the court. If they make a mistake or commit a foul, they are immediately substituted (within reason) and there is little to no on-court discussion as to why or what they could've improved. You know, coaching. Walters is quite vocal and actively coaches.

We make poorly executed, cross-court passes that are easy to pick off. These mistakes would never be verbally addressed in-game. VT had 9 steals by mid 2nd half. NINE steals with about 15 minutes left in the game. We have no offensive identity. High screen, an occasional roll, a lot of pick and pop, find your own shot. Also, plenty of opportunity for the patented Childress/Johnson "head down, drive to the basket" with 2-3 defenders waiting for you.
Agree, particularly last paragraph. Watch some video of Clemson v Duke last night or v UNC on Saturday. All players move and cut. Brownell has a sheet of plays similar to a football OC. Brownell has never had great players but he can coach. Manning is a moron.

The strategy against VT was not hard to figure out. They are tiny. Wear them out inside; when they pack the paint because Sarr is killing them inside, kick it out for an open three point shot. Sarr did that (with White) for a 8 minute first half stretch when WF pushed the lead to 6. VT was helpless. Then, inexplicably, we stopped getting the ball inside, Sarr was actually moving out to the top of the key, where he is ineffective, and of course, WF didn't have its best 3 point shooters in the game for most of the 2nd half. Naturally, VT goes a 41-15 run from the end of the first half through most of the 2nd half. WF somehow only scored 15 points in almost 17 minutes of game time from the 3:16 mark of the first half until the 6:32 mark of the 2nd half. Against a team with no inside presence. Almost impossible to be that dense.

Ismael Massoud, who will hit the open shot and can shoot over anyone on VT's roster, plays 7 minutes, while Isaiah Mucius (and his 0-5 from the field) plays 24 minutes, and Sharone Wright (and his 1-6 from the field) plays 19 minutes. Mind-boggling. Went to bed when WF was down 20 with 6 minutes to go. Knew that, when I checked the next morning, Chill would lead a scoring spurt to make the game seem closer than it was. WF scored 24 points in the last 6 minutes when the game was out of reach.

Stater of the obvious, but Mike Young can flat out coach. VT off a sweet 16 appearance loses their coach, all 5 starters, and a reserve or two and they are 13-4. A lot of folks passed on Mike and he is proving them to be idiots. I know Wake never looked at him even though Wofford and Wake have a lot in common.

If I am Currie, this is the deal breaker no matter what the $$$ is. VT had no business winning this game but did not because they had better players, but a far better coach.

RC107 had a lot of reasons why VT was an invalid comparison for Wake. I can't remember any of them but I am sure they were really good reasons.

I need to attend a game. If he is a few rows behind me, where he can see me, I am openly questioning Manning and using "coaching" and "why" a lot, loudly. "Why are we going small...why did you take out White...why call a timeout now...what are you doing...get in the huddle...get Childress out..." That's hard to do, and Wellman would have security escort you out, even if 100% sober.

Boos? No, because that impacts the players, but there are non-verbal ways to make sure Currie knows, during the game, that Manning is the problem. He has to know that, right? I mean he is not sitting there assessing this anymore, is he?

Did you have that opportunity? Or is that not fair to ask?

The Deacons provide an ugly, inept performance befitting their coach. This season is provided for all the Wellman/Manning defenders so that there are no doubts about the source of the demise of Wake Forest basketball. Tonight's attendance was 4873.

That's a lot of stupid Wake fans.
