Matt Taibbi: Bush far tougher than Obama on corporate America

He's a savvy socialist. Redistributing wealth without redistributing wealth isn't easy to pull off.

It is funny that the complaints from the right about soaking the rich and the complaints from the left about coddling the rich are diametrically opposed to one another.

hmm, seems that big business likes the welfare nanny-state coddling of pregnant 16-year olds in shitty schools getting affirmative action and sucking off the teat of hard-working Americans just fine, eh?

Sure beats paying them a fair wage! fuck that shit, cha-ching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really. He gave a bunch of bullshit rhetoric to convince a bunch of gullible, mostly young people that he was different. In reality he is no different that any other Democrat or Republican.

That has nothing to do with complaints/claims from the right being hypocritical. Publicly, they act like they are getting prison sexed, privately, they couldn't be happier.

smash, smash, smash

So if President Obama had run on the platform "I will continue and expand the policies of George W Bush when it comes to corporate corruption" how would that have gone over?

Path dependency is a bitch.

Only this board can turn a thread about how Obama is absolutely in bed with corporate American after running as a populist into a thread about GOP hypocrisy.

Feel free to start another thread.

I wasn't defending Obama. I was criticizing the idea that Bush was tougher than Obama on corporate America.

Let me expand on my point that LK thought was a Stretch Armstrong-like defense of Obama.

We are in an era of deregulation that gained momentum at the end of the Clinton administration. That chart shows the effects.

The linear trendline is a pretty clear sign that the story is bigger than Bush = good, Obama = bad. There are larger forces at play.

Harder to prosecute more people with fewer laws on the books.

Wasn't that what he ran on? He has been the President for 5 1/2 years. When do we get the change he promised?

He needs Congress to enact any reasonable financial reform to stop that trend. He's been cozy with big business but don't act like he hasn't been stonewalled by the Republicans on several fronts.

You're either joking or getting in a semantics debate, right?

I think there are plenty of laws on the books that would allow the administration to file charges against the TBTF banks or their executives. The administration chose not to prosecute. That's on them.

Specifically, what financial reforms that would have reversed the trend outlined in this thread.
