Big game this Saturday. With ACC, NCAA Seeding and Regular Season ACC title implications at stake, the Canes visit Winston this Saturday. Deacs will seek revenge as Canes outscored WF 92-84 in Coral Gables on New Years Day. Here is the previous report on the Canes: https://www.ogboards.com/forums/showthread.php/33293-MBB-Game-14-WF-Miami-Saturday-6-pm-ESPNU
Miami Update: Miami dominated the start of the ACC season going 5-0 with wins over WF, Cuse, Clemson, NC State and at Duke. During that 5 game run, the Canes offense was humming as they averaged 85 ppg and shot well over 40% from 3. That offensive explosion has proven unsustainable as over Miami's last 8 ACC games, Miami went 4-4, and their ppg has dropped to 70. Most recently, the Canes have struggled from the behind the arc shooting 28% (25 for 89) from three over its last 4.
Last night, Miami launched an impressive comeback as they trailed GT 32-18 late in the first half, and with the outside shots not falling and GT's lack of an inside presence, the Canes took it to the rack (65% from 2; 23% from 3), eventually wearing down the struggling Jackets in a 79-70 Canes win. Miami F Jordan Miller missed last night's GT game with a leg injury his status is now listed as "day to day". Miller is a key piece for the Canes (he scored 17, 7 for 9 from the field, against WF at Miami), his absence on Saturday would be big. Without Miller, Canes only played 7 (not counting Deng Gak who played 2 minutes and didn't record a stat). Cane C Sam Waardenburg (he missed the WF at Miami game) led Miami with 19 points (3-4 from 3) 8 boards and 5 assists. All 5 Miami starters reached double figures against GT: McGusty 17 (1 for 8 from three), Wong 14 (0 for 4 from three), Moore 13, Walker 12. The Canes bench scored just 4 points -- all from frosh G Bensley Joseph. Miami has ramped down the tempo recently: averaging just 65 possessions per game over the last 8 ACC games; Miami averaged 71 possessions in its first 5.
The Projection: KP projects a 79-72 WF win in 70 possessions. If Miller is out, the Canes are in trouble as they have almost no depth (Miami is #346 - last in the ACC - in bench minutes). Regardless if Miller is out or not, the keys for WF are to pound Miami inside (WF shot 25 for 34 from 2 -- 74% @ Coral Gables), and to control Miami's guards (Wong, McGusty, Moore) when the Canes have the ball. Wong shredded WF last time out scoring 25 points (10 for 13 from 2). Only the Cuse loss was a worse defensive effort for WF as the Deacs surrendered 1.3 points per possession (ppp) in Miami. WF's defense has been outstanding lately (#2 in the ACC in defensive efficiency -- WF held State to .77 ppp last night), got to believe Forbes will have the Deacs ready on Saturday. WF wins, but can't endorse taking the Deacs if the line is 7 or higher. Let's do this!
