Metal

your brothers band slays, sounds alot like insect warfare (probably my favorite grind band). ive never seen pig destroyer live but i can only imagine the carnage..

Thank you! I haven't seen pig destroyer myself but I would love too.

Old school head-banger here. Was introduced to Priest, Dio, Metallica and the like back in the mid 80's. Between the rise of the hair-bands and my life changes, I kind of fell away from metal for a few decades. Over the last few years I've been reintroduced to the "old metal" through That Metal Show. I'm sure most of you are shaking your head now, but I love this show. I find myself sneaking around the house to find a spare TV that I can turn up and watch in privacy. It's like I'm trying to watch midget porn or something.

One of my teenage sons will walk in and say, "Who is that old dude?" "You see son, he used to be the lead guitarist for Metallica, but now he is the lead singer and guitarist for Megadeth...when he's not in rehab." [blank stare]
"This dude used to be the singer for Black Sabbath (after Ozzy of course), but now he's actually dead, but he did have his own band for a while...after Rainbow, of course." [blank stare]

MrsNF will just walk by, shaking her head in disgust.

I have no idea who most of the bands mentioned on this thread are, but like someone said, Metal means a lot of different things to different people.
Old fart - OUT

I grew up on the standard 80s diet of Metallica/Slayer/Megadeth etc. My taste now is all over the board - bands like Andromeda, Nightwish, Iced Earth, Dream Theater on their heavier days, Falconer (RennFaire metal FTMFW). As I've gotten older, Saxon and Maiden are two classics I've learned to appreciate more.

I'll have to try a couple of those. I'm a huge Nightwish and Dream Theater live. I saw DT in Asheville a few years ago and had tickets to Nightwish in Charlotte about 4 years ago, but they cancelled.

You should check out Epica. They're probably my favorite of the Symphonic Metal genre. I saw them a few years ago in Raleigh and loved the show. The newest Epica album is kinda meh, but Consign to Oblivion is one of my favorites from any band.

My 8yo son idolizes Ozzy and RJD. Of course, I have an Ozzy "No Rest for the Wicked" poster in my garage.

Duly noted. I would add Symphony X and Operatika to my list of pet favorites.

I've seen DT live a number of times and they have never disappointed. Their double-bill tour with Queensryche (with Fates Warning as the opener) in 2003 was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Haven't seen them since Mangini took over drums, though. They've been my gateway drug to a lot of the metal/metal-ish bands I like now. Nightwish was on my list but they just dumped their lead singer (for the second time).

i've been getting into "pissed off hardcore" (best way to describe it) recently. Dangers and Defeater are my first two favorites in this small underground-ish scene of music. here's a taste for those who arent privy to the style:

and defeater only does concept albums (which i fucking love) and they do it better than anyone. their albums personally take me on an emotional ride, sometimes ill just turn the lights off lay down and go for a ride with them. i know someone on here will dig them. heres are a couple of their many fine works, i hope it will make you want to check them out. the one down side is their stuff is hard to find if you arent a torrent user, i would be happy to send their stuff to anyone who wants it...

just saw this thread and this was one of those days where i was working in the yard and put liquid metal on my xm radio. sometimes youre just in the mood.

not a fan of the 80s/90s "metal" but love some of the newer scream/thrash/hardcore

My nephew is the drummer for BTBAM.

nice. i've always wondered how the guys families feel about the type of music they make. i was at one BTBAM show in Charlotte (the fillmore) and they said that their families were in attendance, which surprised me somewhat because most people in my family look down on me for my taste in music, and i couldnt imagine how they would feel if i made a career of it.

I love metal, but I am old so I don't really understand metalcore, like BTBAM. I think it is overproduced, uses too many cutesy studio tricks, and sweeps bore me. It is just too well-produced to inspire any feeling in me at all.

I'm going to Deathfest in Maryland to see Sleep. I guess I mostly like sludgy, stoner doom stuff these days. swallowthesun mentioned a ton of stuff I like.

That one album of theirs is the shit. Too lazy to look up.

Sleep's Holy Mountain. So damn good. Better than the 2.3 million dollar man for sure!

That's right. A lot of the guys' families were at that show. Personally, their music isn't my style (I graduated in '83), nor any of my family members, but we're thrilled for Blake and for the success of BTBAM. To have the experiences that BTBAM has given him, most of us can only dream about, especially at such a young age. So, more power to him, the other guys in the band, and their music.

As opposed to being a waiter at Denny's?

Really like bands like Porcupine Tree, Anathema, and Riverside which could be considered metal but I'd consider them more post progressive rock. Also like Tool and any Opeth song that doesn't have growling, which is only like a third of their stuff. I can't tolerate harsh vocals or screaming. But I do like Panopticon from Isis, even though that has some harsh vocals. I need to check out Katatonia some more. Their lead singer is doing an album with one of my favorite bands, The Pineapple Thief.
