NFL Preseason

don't understand Cowboys cutting Ahmad Dixon and keeping Jeff Heath. were the same organization that drafted Matt Johnson in the 4th round when many teams had him as a non priority FA, then kept him on the 53 for 2 years while he battled Miles Austin-like hamstring problems. Never fuckin played. Garret loves these scrappy lunch pale bs guys from D2 and D3 schools (and thats not even coded for just the rando small white dudes we have plethora of. see BW Webb from fuckin William and Mary…Jakar Hamilton SC state…).

Kyle Wilber might honestly be our most reliable player on the D this year, despite the fact he's only taken like 25 snaps and is returning from injury. ironically one of the few guys to ever see power conference competition for 4 years.

This is one of the worst Defensive rosters I have ever seen on an NFL team (expansion teams included). the line for Dallas is 8 right now: you want a guaranteed return go to vegas and take the under because there is no way Dallas see's 8 wins. WE ARE GOING TO SUCK ALL THE DICKS THIS YEAR. MARK THAT SHIT DOWN.

Not to mention that Romo's back isn't going to last past the first half of the season.

DYK? Of the 1,696 NFL players currently on rosters, 460 were undrafted (27%), an average of just over 14 per team (via @EliasSports)

interesting

Not really that interesting.

First, about a fifth of those undrafted players are specialists (kicker, punter, long snapper) who are very rarely drafted anyway. So take out those ~96 players and it comes out to about 23% of position players who are undrafted.

Second, the NFL only drafts enough players to fill 15% of the roster spots each year. The average career of a rookie who makes the Week 1 roster is 6 years.

So even if every drafted rookie made the Week 1 roster and played just the average of 6 years, there would still be 10% of the roster left for undrafted players.

I think it's even more interesting that there are 1,236 drafted players in the NFL out of the 4,352 players who have been drafted since the 1998 draft (just using Peyton's draft as the starting point). That's 28.4%. That's unreal considering a good number of those who aren't still in the league retired after having productive careers.

It's interesting, but because it shows that drafted players have a very good chance at making and staying on rosters despite the fact very few players are drafted relative to available roster spots and drafted players have to beat out players that were already on the rosters.

The NFL is extremely competitive and being drafted is a huge leg up.

Agreed. It's rare to get cut if you're, say, a 3rd round pick, even if you suck. The GM doesn't want to admit to making a horrendous draft choice. Case in point, Jets a few years back kept Joe McKnight and cut Danny Woodhead. Now, maybe the upside of McKnight at the time was enough to warrant keeping him around, but in hindsight that was a terrible move. Then the Patriots picked him up and he lit shit up. Thanks Tannenbaum

Oh yeah. That's definitely one angle. But that last stat is amazing. Over 28% of all players who were drafted since Peyton Manning went #1 are still on rosters? That doesn't even make sense. Something has to be wrong, but I'm not sure what.

People like to point out the occasional Woodhead as evidence that NFL scouts don't know what they're doing, but that's way off. The NFL actually bakes in error by only drafting 7 rounds and then adding dozen more players as UFAs and camp fodder. The new practice squad rules do this as well by allowing more UFAs to get contracts and for young veterans who don't make a roster to stick around like the Panthers' Robert Lester.

All these stats show that the NFL knows their stuff and runs a tight league to account for what they don't know.

Okay, here's my hometown Ravens preview after the preseason.

It's the OL, stupid. The Ravens rushed for 3 ypc last year, and Flacco was throwing from his back, an unsuccessful place from which to throw. Harbs brought in a run game coordinator, Juan Castillo, who had an entirely different blocking scheme from the OL coach, Andy Moeller. Throw in mostly season long injuries to Pitta and Osemele and crappy back-ups on the OL, and you have a fubar situation. (Castillo got most the blame.) In the offseason, Moller and Caldwell leave, and Harbs wanted to promote from within for the OC position. Bisciotti and Ozzie stepped in and urged/forced him to bring in Kubiak and Dennison, the best offseason move they made, and they got a real C, Zuttah, to replace Gradkowski, who sucked. The starting OL looked mostly pretty good in the preseason, including a 2nd year RT in Wagner. The back-ups still mostly blow. They kept 7 WRs, and I think they want to trade a WR for a reserve OL. They're deeper at WR, TE and RB than they were last year. Now that we have a real OC in Kubiak, and he, Dennison and Castillo are on the same page in terms of blocking schemes, look for the offense to have a productive year. I think Flacco might have his best statistical season and be a legit fantasy #2 QB. Hope you didn't spend a high fantasy pick on a Ravens RB. Rice will split carries with Pierce, Forsett and Talliavero. I'd rate Pitta in the 7-10 range for fantasy TEs. Torrey Smith should get about 1K-1200 receiving yards, and Steve Smith 8-900. Tucker will be a top-5 K.

The D should be a bit better than last year. We've had 3 injuries to the DL but were deep there to begin with. Last year's 3rd round pick, Williams, is looking like the real deal at NT. Ngata looks good, until he inevitably gets injured halfway through the year. The LB is stacked and 1 of the league's best with Sizzle, Dumervil and Upshaw at OLB and Smith, Mosley and Brown at ILB. CB depth is an issue, but we just signed Cox, and now Webb and Jimmy Smith are healthy. S is the only weakness on D. The D might not be elite but should be better than average. ST still solid.

Bottom line for the AFCN is Ravens with 10-11 wins, Cincy with 10, Pitt with 9-10 and Cleveland with 6. Cincy is the most complete team in the division, albeit with a mediocre QB, but they are loaded on D, and Marvin is a good defensive coach. Their problem is they have to play NE and Den, whereas the Ravens play Miami and SD - that's a game or game and a half difference right there. We all play the AFCS and NFCS. Pitt's problem is the D is not as talented as it used to be, outside of a pretty darn good LB corps, and they're thin at WR on O - and thinner than Cincy and Balmur overall. Still think it was a bad idea to nudge Arians out the door in favor of Haley, but I still consider Tomlin and LeBeau 2 of the best in the business. And Cleveland has a good D and OL, but if the preseason is a gauge, their QBs an WRs blow. As I keep saying about Manziel, if you're gonna party like Namath, you better play like Namath. Feel bad for Browns fans.
