North Carolina BBall & FBall Players Can't Read Very Well

As for the content, it’s heartbreaking. The one titled, “Abortion” includes, as written: “It seem that the women ought to be the one who desides,” “Abortion is a tough typic and men difently does not need to make the choice,” and “women that get abortion are many times looked at as a bad person.”

The other, titled “A Girl Part of UNC Football,” includes, “The young lady manger [manager] fills that she does get specill treatment. She fills that the coaches treates her nice becaus she is girl.”

His grade on these college essays? A perfect 5 out of 5, on each. They include the professor’s check marks of content approval, including twice-underlined praise as, “Interesting.”

Holy. Shit.

I'm amused by "A Girl Part of UNC Football." I've compared UNC football to girl parts quite often.

This is Willingham's deposition for the NCAAs. Pretty damning.

I applied for jobs outside of athletics at U NC beginning in 2009 because the pressure to keep students eligible had eclipsed learning and academic integrity. The cheating in "no show" paper classes and in our mentoring probram (e.g. writing papers for players) had become overwhelming

Teaching letters, short vowel sounds, and sentence structure to struggling college learners became the most important and time-consuming part of my job.

Of the 182 athletes screened [for learning disabilities] between 2005 and 2010, a great majority (85%) come from profits sports [football and basketball], although several teams are represented in this group. About 60% (110) of these athletes had reading scores below 50% range- constituting a 4th-8th grade reading levels. More than a dozen were functionally illiterate.

I'll leave this here for your enjoyment.

From Carol Folt, UNC Chancellor:

Dear Carolina Community:

I am writing today to provide my perspective on a topic that has been reported in the media recently, and more importantly, is of great concern to our community: what we are doing to ensure the integrity of our support for student-athletes and their success from admission to graduation. Carolina’s recent academic and athletic improprieties shook our University to its core. In spite of seven investigations (http://rawlingspanel.web.unc.edu/related-links/) and numerous reforms already in place, this continues to be a painful journey for the Carolina community, and I will not ignore the lessons learned.

Even as we continue this work, Carolina is facing a surge of new stories in the national and local media about the academic preparation of our student-athletes. This interest was sparked in part by highly publicized claims about student literacy, and continues in the media almost daily. I take these claims very seriously, but we have been unable to reconcile these claims with either our own facts or with those data currently being cited as the source for the claims. Moreover, the data presented in the media does not match up with those data gathered by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. For example, only two of the 321 student-athletes admitted in 2012 and 2013 fell below the SAT and ACT levels that were cited in a recent CNN report as the threshold for reading levels for first-year students. And those two students are in good academic standing. Nevertheless, we are investigating all the claims being made and, if they are found to have merit, I will take all appropriate actions. We also will do our best to correct assertions we believe are not based in fact.

This issue is part of a larger national conversation about the role and impact of college sports and even further about the commitment schools make to ensure their students receive the support they need to succeed in the classroom as well as on the playing field. I assure you that I will not accept anything less than the excellence we expect Carolina to represent for our students and the community.

I am asking for your patience and understanding today. I still have many questions, and I am seeking to understand the complete picture of what additional work we need to do in this area. We have learned many lessons in the past few years, and I am actively building on those lessons to continue to improve our community. It is our responsibility to address these issues, the people involved, and the media attention being generated by them, very thoughtfully and thoroughly. Our goals are to be proactive in our analysis and solutions, to protect the privacy rights of individual students, and to apply the rigorous standards of assessment expected here at Carolina. Whether we agree or disagree, we must welcome healthy debate, respect each other and in that way show the true character of our Carolina community.

In closing, I want to thank you for your commitment to and concern for our students, faculty and staff, and for making this great institution even stronger. I will keep you informed of our progress and the results of our work. Our impressive, dedicated and talented students from the classroom to the playing field – and the work of our faculty and staff to improve the lives of millions of North Carolinians – is what makes us so proud of Carolina every day.

Best,

Carol L. Folt
Chancellor

I think it's too late to do much, they let Pandora's box open up. What is unfolding is indeed part of the national discussion, but unfortunately UNC built themselves up as the white tower and made themselves the target. They have now become the poster child for what is wrong. It's going to be a long 3-4 years as more info comes out. One of my UNC buds said..at least his kids might now be able to get in!

I just posted this exchange over on the Pit but I figure it'd be appropriate to share here too:

This morning I was talking with a UNC-fan coworker about basketball. He was asking who Wake's best player was and I said CMM and Devin Thomas but they could also be inconsistent. He was wondering where the next superstar type player was and I told him I think Wake is trying to recruit players who will graduate. It led to a discussion on academics and athletes.

Then he said "so I heard there was a school where there was a whole department of African-American studies where classes weren't even happening but players were getting passing grades!"

I told him "yes... that is UNC."

He then started backpedaling and was like "well didn't you see the recent story that 60% of college football players read at a 4-8 grade reading level?"

"Well yes... but I am pretty sure that was also just UNC."

It was kind of great.

Where on earth do you work that employs someone so clueless?

The better question is where can anyone work where you don't have to put up with clueless bandwaggoners?

Hell, even the bandwaggonners I work with have been disgusted with the stuff being reported. Noted, it's stuff that's been "known" for a long time if you followed the State forums, but seems to have gained a lot of legitimacy with UNC fans now that it's being reported nationally. I've been rather surprised. Maybe they're still in shock and the denial stage hasn't come yet? Either way, I'm enjoying watching UNC burn.

Yes, I wasn't sure if Ph knew where she worked. If so, well played. If not, still funny.

Is she the poster who works at Time Warner? I thought about that but I wasn't sure.

I've had the same experience. I think they're past shock and denial though and moving into pain/anger. They have yet to get mad at the administration that put them in this spot but two of my friends expressed anger at Willingham the "turncoat".

Next I expect them to start thinking UNC can overcome the problem by just doing "good", or maybe they'll just go into depression...before "we're not really the Carolina of old and never will be again" sinks in.

Her coworker is the guy who spearheaded the "customers don't want fast internet" movement
